Lactate and Lactate Clearance Are Predictive Factors for Mortality in Patients with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

Introduction: Findings of inadequate tissue perfusion might be used to predict the risk of mortality. In this study, we evaluated the effects of lactate and lactate clearance on mortality of patients who had undergone extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Methods: Patients younger than 18 years old and who needed venoarterial ECMO support after surgery for congenital heart defects, from July 2010 to January 2019, were retrospectively analyzed.

Factors affecting the clinical outcomes in pediatric post-cardiotomy patients requiring perioperative peritoneal dialysis.

Objective: Fluid overload is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in pediatric cardiac surgery. In the pediatric age group, peritoneal dialysis might improve postoperative outcome with avoiding fluid overload and electrolyte imbalance. It preserves hemodynamic status with the advantage of passive drainage.

Comparison of I-gel with Classic Laryngeal Mask Airway Regarding the Ease of Use and Clinical Performance.

Objective: I-gel is a new supraglottic airway device without an inflatable cuff. We aimed to compare I-gel and the classic laryngeal mask airway (LMA) regarding the ease of use and clinical performance in Turkish population.

Methods: Fifty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I-II patients were randomly allocated into two groups: Group I-gel and Group LMA.

Scimitar syndrome: the curved Turkish sabre.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare association of congenital cardiopulmonary anomalies characterized by an anomalous pulmonary vein (scimitar vein) that drains into the inferior vena cava, a hypogenetic right lung, and dextroposition of the heart. It has been reported in 3% to 6% of patients with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection. Patients are either diagnosed early with severe symptoms (infantile type) or late with minimal symptoms (childhood/adult type).

Surgical treatment of common arterial trunk in patients beyond the first year of life.

Background: Common arterial trunk (persistent truncus arteriosus) is a rare cardiac defect requiring surgical repair early in life because of the fast development of pulmonary vascular obstructive disease. We present our institutional experience with patients having common arterial trunk who are diagnosed after one year of age.

Patients And Methods: Between August 2010 and May 2013, a total of 1,436 patients were treated for congenital cardiac defects at our institution.

Anomalous origin of the left subclavian artery from the pulmonary artery.

Isolated left subclavian artery from the pulmonary trunk is a rare congenital cardiovascular malformation. In this report, we present the images of ascending aortic aneurysm and left subclavian artery originating from the pulmonary artery in a 4-year-old girl in addition to her congenital cardiac pathology.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a patient with multiple autoimmune disorders and hyperthyroidism.

Takotsubo cardiomypathy is a very rare cardiovascular syndrome leading to myocardial infarction and left ventricular dysfunction in the absence of a detectable coronary artery lesion. It is accepted as reversible left ventricular asynergy occuring typically after an intrinsic adrenergic hyperstimulation. In this report we present Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a 75-year-old patient with multiple autoimmune disorders.

Double outlet right ventricle with unilateral absence of left pulmonary artery.

Congenital absence of unilateral pulmonary artery, either as a primary defect or in combination with other congenital cardiovascular malformations, is very rare. Double outlet right ventricle pathology in combination with unilateral absence of pulmonary artery has only been reported once in the literature. In this report, we present our experience with double outlet right ventricle with unilateral absence of left pulmonary artery in a 3-year-old female patient who underwent a palliative procedure and was scheduled for correction.

Tetralogy of Fallot with unilateral absent pulmonary artery.

Background: Tetralogy of Fallot is a common congenital cardiac malformation. A rare subgroup includes unilateral absence of the pulmonary artery, either the left or the right main branch. The literature lacks an established treatment for these cases, and surgical options carry certain mortality and morbidity.

Furthermore, recent patents of novel pharmaceutical interventions in the field of acetylsalicylic acid, expanding treatment options are presented.

Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography modifies strategy in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.

Background: Off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery (OPCAB) can improve operative morbidity and mortality in high risk patients. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (ITEE) is being employed increasingly during cardiac surgery.

Methods: Routine ITEE was performed in 744 OPCAB patients performed over a five year period.
