Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the impact of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on the secondary stability of delayed dental implants, as prior research on this topic was insufficient.
  • Twelve trials involving 456 dental implants were analyzed, revealing that while PRF may improve stability at different time points, the certainty of evidence remains low due to varying biases in the studies.
  • The findings suggest that more high-quality randomized controlled trials with longer follow-up periods are necessary to provide clearer guidance for clinicians regarding the use of PRF in delayed dental implant placements.

Background And Objectives: The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is intended to prevent inadequate, delayed, or denied treatment of emergent conditions by emergency departments (EDs). EMTALA requirements pertain to patients of all ages presenting to dedicated EDs regardless of whether facilities have dedicated pediatric specialty services. This study aims to describe EMTALA-related civil monetary penalty (CMP) settlements involving minors.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a significant and pressing public health concern, posing serious challenges to effectively preventing and treating persistent diseases. Despite various efforts made in recent years to address this problem, the global trends of AMR continue to escalate without any indication of decline. As AMR is well-known for antibiotics, developing new materials such as metal containing compounds with different mechanisms of action is crucial to effectively address this challenge.

Background: Locally advanced cancers of the pancreatic body can abut or involve the celiac axis, hepatic artery, or superior mesenteric artery. Recent evidence suggests that these tumors are amenable to surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (Hackert et al., Locally advanced pancreatic cancer: neoadjuvant therapy with FOLFIRINOX results in resectability in 60 % of the patients.

Background: This study describes the deaths of individuals in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention between FY2021-2023, updating a report from FY2018-2020, which identified an increased death rate amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Data was extracted from death reports published online by ICE. Causes of deaths were recorded, and death rates per 100,000 admissions were calculated using population statistics reported by ICE.

Article Synopsis
  • Complete resection of large retroperitoneal tumors often needs vascular reconstruction, typically using prosthetic grafts, but this study highlights the use of a large autologous peritoneal graft for inferior vena cava (IVC) reconstruction.
  • An elderly male with a significant retroperitoneal mass underwent successful en bloc resection of the tumor, right kidney, and IVC, followed by IVC reconstruction using his own peritoneum, which proved to be a challenging yet successful procedure.
  • Post-operative recovery was smooth, and a follow-up CT scan at six months showed the IVC graft functioning well, suggesting that autologous peritoneal grafts are a safe and effective option for venous reconstruction in such surgeries.

There is a significant shortage of transplantable organs in the UK particularly from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups, of which Muslims make a large proportion. The British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) held a nationwide series of community gatherings with the aim of describing the beliefs and attitudes to organ donation amongst British Muslims and evaluate the efficacy of a national public health programme on views and uncertainties regarding religious permissibility and willingness to register. Eight public forums were held across the UK between June 2019 and March 2020 by the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA).

A wealth of research indicates that emotions play an instrumental role in creative problem-solving. However, most of these studies have relied primarily on diary studies and self-report scales when measuring emotions during the creative processes. There has been a need to capture in-the-moment emotional experiences of individuals during the creative process using an automated emotion recognition tool.

Background: Climate change, poverty, and violence increasingly drive migration to the United States. United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detain some individuals while awaiting determination of immigration status or potential deportation. Over the last two decades, more than 200 individuals died in ICE detention.

Importance: Concerns have been raised that substandard medical care has contributed to deaths in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. After each in-custody death, ICE produces detainee death reviews, which describe the circumstances of the death and determine whether ICE Performance-Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) were violated.

Objective: To describe factors associated with deaths in ICE detention facilities.

Objective: Although often asymptomatic at initial diagnosis, abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) require careful surveillance to prevent rupture, with rupture-associated mortality rates as high as 90%. The purpose of this study was to explore if a performance improvement initiative implemented across a large radiology practice successfully increased inclusion of best practice recommendations (BPRs) within the radiology report across the practice.

Methods: After BPRs for asymptomatic AAA surveillance were developed, a structured reporting macro for follow-up recommendation was integrated into dictation software.

Background: Many civil liberties organizations have raised concerns that substandard medical care in United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities have led to preventable deaths. The 2018 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Bill required ICE to make public all reports regarding in-custody deaths within 90 days beginning in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. Accordingly, ICE has released death reports following each in-custody death since April of 2018.

Timely, accurate diagnosis of upper extremity vascular pathology is critical for successful clinical and surgical management. Although the vast majority of upper extremity vascular injury is due to trauma, physicians in the emergency setting, including radiologists, must be familiar with vascular lesions from iatrogenic injury, thromboembolic disease, vascular malformations, and vasculitis. Non-invasive diagnostic imaging with multidetector CT (MDCT) angiography is often employed in the emergency department to evaluate patients with suspected vascular pathology of the upper extremity.

Background: Antibiotics are known to improve clinical parameters in patients with periodontitis, so they should be capable of enhancing the surgical treatment outcome by improving clinical parameters when given adjunctively following periodontal flap surgery.

Methods: Thirty subjects with moderate to severe periodontitis were randomly divided into three groups: Group I: 10 patients without antibiotic prescription after flap surgery, Group II: 10 patients prescribed with metronidazole 400 mg t.i.

  • - Top-Down Proteomics (TDP) is a new method for studying proteins that uses high-resolution mass spectrometry, allowing for better measurement of intact protein masses, sequence information, and detection of post-translational modifications (PTMs) compared to traditional methods.
  • - Despite its advantages, TDP faces challenges like complex spectra and limited software support, which complicate the analysis of proteins and PTMs.
  • - To improve TDP data analysis, the open-source toolbox 'SPECTRUM' has been developed, offering advanced features and significantly better protein identification rates compared to existing tools; it’s accessible on GitHub.

Foreign body introduction during coronary stent delivery is an uncommon, yet potentially fatal, complication of coronary angiography and interventions. Inadvertent introduction of gauze fibers, starch granules and other foreign materials into circulation has been reported in literature. The introduction of inorganic surgical debris can cause distal embolization, vessel occlusion and wall infiltration causing infarction, acute stenosis and granulomatous reaction.
