Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the effectiveness of transperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy (LN) versus open nephrectomy (ON) for treating giant hydronephrosis in 88 patients over a four-year period.
  • It found that while LN had a longer average operative time (195 mins) compared to ON (127 mins), it resulted in shorter hospital stays, lower pain scores, and less blood loss.
  • The conclusion suggests that LN is a safe and effective option for patients, offering benefits such as reduced morbidity and quicker recovery compared to the traditional open surgery.

Introduction: Although it is apparently simpler to perform unstented tubularized incised plate (TIP) repair for distal hypospadias repair, consensus on feasibility of the use of unstented repair is still a matter of debate. Evidence reporting that unstented repair outcome is comparable to stented repair, especially in the long-term, is still weak due to reporting outcome inconsistencies, different study designs, inclusion of more than one technique, and inherent variability in meatal locations. Thus, we need a continuous and evolving assessment of the outcome of unstented repair to compile adequate evidence on the advantage of unstented TIP repair in distal hypospadias entity.

This study aimed to compare the expression of genes regulating follicles development, survival and steroid hormones secretion in oocytes and granulosa cells (GCs) and study the correlation between their expression and follicular fluid (FF) levels of progesterone (P4) in pregnant and non-pregnant camels. In total, 138 ovarian pairs from slaughtered camels were used. Gene expression and hormonal assay were determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively.

Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) results in a lower stone-free rate (SFR) for ectopic kidneys when using the standard technique, directing the shock wave from the same side of the stone; however, this may not be the optimal approach when the ectopic kidney is located more medial and anterior than the normally positioned kidney. Thus, contralateral coupling where waves come from the opposite direction may result in a better outcome. We tested the feasibility and outcome of contralateral coupling during SWL for stone in ectopic kidney.

Much is still unknown about LUT function after receiving renal graft. Graft function was the main focus of different studies discussing the same issue. However, these studies ignored the effects of the graft on lower tract function and more demand for bladder cycling and growth of the child.

Background: Results of SWL in treatment of upper ureteral calculi are conflicting which is definitely affected by stone locations along the proximal ureter, which is may be due to the more deep and medial course of the ureter distally over the thick and strong abdominal back wall which may hinder shock waves.

Methodology: One hundred patients with radiopaque proximal ureteral stone opposite 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae who had SWL were randomized into two groups. First group had SWL through anterior belly wall in supine position with countertraction, the second group had standard posterior SWL.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver malignancy, and is now the six most common in between malignancies. Early diagnosis of HCC with prompt treatment increases the opportunity of patients to survive. With the advances in understanding the molecular biology of HCC, new therapeutic strategies to treat HCC have emerged.
