Objective: Are individuals who use hallucinogens self-medicating their mental illness and are they more likely to abuse other illegal substances?

Design Setting Participants: Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), collected by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) database was queried for correlations with hallucinogen use. Using age group as a control variable, different variables were run through a crosstab in order to find significant data pointing to the implications of hallucinogen use.

Results: The data from the crosstab analysis showed three key findings about hallucinogen use: Those with mental illness or substance abuse issues were substantially more likely to use hallucinogens, the hallucinogen use greatly increased with the pandemic along with further mental health issues, and those who used hallucinogens were more significantly likely to abuse other illegal substances, primarily in a younger population.

Major congenital anomalies (MCAs) significantly contribute to perinatal mortality and morbidity. Globally, the United Arab Emirates has the sixth-highest prevalence rate of congenital anomalies. The lack of clear baseline prevalence data for MCAs impedes the development of interventions to alleviate this burden.

Since corrosion causes significant harm to the environment and economy, sustainable corrosion inhibitors are essential. This study set out to examine Anti-corrosion ability of a number of closely related polycyclic compounds of flavone derivatives, namely 5,7-dimethoxyflavone (1), 4',5,7-trimethoxyflavone (2), 3',4',5'-trimethoxyflavone (3), 5-hydroxy-3,3',4',7-tetramethoxyflavone (4), tangeretin (5), 3,3',4',5,6,7,8-heptamethoxyflavone (6), 3',5,7-trihydroxy-4',5',6-trimethoxyflavone (7) and 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxy-3,6,8-trimethoxyflavone (8), using the DFT/B3LYP/6-311 + + G(d, p) basis set. Monte Carlo simulations were used to reveal the adsorption of the investigated compounds on the Cu(111) surface.

Chronic severe neuropathic pain (NP) affects one in 10 individuals over the age of 30 in North America. Standard pharmacological interventions are associated with significant side effects and have limited effectiveness. Diets seeking to improve physiological health, support gut barrier integrity, and decrease systemic inflammation have recently emerged as powerful tools conferring neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, potentially reducing the overall morbidity and mortality of multiple neurological and metabolic diseases.

Consumers are increasingly seeking nutritionally enhanced products, unique flavours and packaging, and ethically sourced ingredients. Significant technological advancements and investments in product innovation by manufacturers are driving the overall market growth for plant-based protein alternatives. In Europe, this growth is largely due to the rising adoption of veganism and the flexitarian trend.

Traumatic posterior fossa extradural hematoma (PFEDH) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. It is characterized by the accumulation of blood between the dura mater and occipital bone, leading to compression of the brainstem. We report the case of a 25-year-old male who presented to the emergency department following a fall, exhibiting confusion and a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 14.

The cardioprotective drug cyclocreatine phosphate has been awarded Food and Drug Administration-orphan drug designation for the prevention of ischemic injury to enhance cardiac graft recovery and survival in heart transplantation. Cyclocreatine phosphate is the water-soluble derivative of cyclocreatine. Estimating the levels of Cyclocreatine phosphate, Adenosine triphosphate, Creatine Phosphate, Creatine and Cyclocreatine helps us in understanding the energy state as well as evaluating the heart cells' function.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on examining how common the negative D antigen phenotype is among pregnant women in the UAE, as well as the adherence to routine antenatal anti-D immunoglobulin prophylaxis (RAADP).
  • Data was gathered from 5,080 pregnant women in Al Ain city, through medical records and questionnaires between May 2017 and January 2021.
  • Results showed that 8.4% had a D-negative status, 0.5% experienced D antigen sensitization, and there was a high RAADP uptake of 88.8%, indicating good compliance with antenatal care practices in the population.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent clinical evidence suggests that gastric acid suppressants may increase the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in elderly patients.
  • This study examined the effects of different acid suppressants (famotidine, esomeprazole, and vonoprazan) on memory tasks in rats, particularly under stress conditions.
  • The results showed that these medications, especially in combination with chronic unpredictable mild stress, led to decreased memory performance and alterations in gut microbiome, inflammation, and brain pathology.

Background: Patient-related factors and limited medication adherence in patients with chronic diseases, are associated with poor clinical outcomes, long-term complications, and increased overall disease costs. Many methods have been tested with mixed results, and innovative approaches are needed to encourage patients to adhere to their prescribed drug regimens.

Methods: This randomised controlled trial examined a new multifactorial pharmacist-led intervention protocol (MPIP), including a medication therapy management (MTM) program with face-to-face counselling, patient-specific medication booklets, and a mobile application, from July 2021 to September 2022 in the Oud Al Touba diagnostic and screening ambulatory centre in 192 patients with type 2 diabetes in the United Arab Emirates.

Patella baja is an uncommon yet dangerous condition primarily found in patients who have received knee surgery, but can occur in anyone, more commonly in overweight, middle-aged males. The case presented outlines an instance in which a man with no previous history of knee injury or surgery, yet with other high-risk factors, develops patella baja after a minor injury. The case highlights the importance of testing and awareness of such conditions.

Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is one of the most serious microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and the leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. Since obesity and type 2 DM (T2DM) are considered as inflammatory conditions, thus reducing their accompanied systemic inflammation may lessen their complications. Sestrin 2 belongs to a group of stress induced proteins which are produced in response to oxidative stress, inflammation and DNA damage.
