Background: There is an ongoing debate about the most appropriate method for reconstructing the pancreas after a pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). This study assessed the impact of pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) with an external pancreatic stent on postoperative outcomes following PD in high-risk patients.

Patients And Methods: This study involves a propensity score-matched analysis of high-risk patients who underwent PD with PG reconstruction.

Background: Idiopathic ileal ulceration after intestinal transplantation (ITx) has been discussed infrequently and has an uncertain natural history and relation to graft rejection. Herein, we review our experience with this pathology.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 225 ITx in 217 patients with minimum 1 y graft survival.

Amputation levels in Egypt and the surrounding neighborhood require a state intervention to localize the manufacturing of prosthetic feet. Amputations are mainly due to chronic diseases, accidents, and hostilities' casualties. The prosthetic foot type is traditionally classified according to the number of axial rotational movements, and is recently classified according to the energy activeness of the foot.

Introduction: In this study, we evaluate the versatility of smartphone thermal imaging technology as a valuable intraoperative modality in different stages of perforator flap surgery aiming to minimize the complications and achieve the best postoperative outcome.

Patients And Methods: Thermography was performed in 20 perforator flaps in 20 patients at different surgical stages in three different ways to identify the most dominant perforator: first, by measuring the surface temperature of the skin; second, by using the dynamic infrared thermography technique; and third, by assessing the perfusion pattern when the flap was supplied by each perforator separately. Thermography was used to help in discarding the least perfused area of the flap.

Article Synopsis
  • * A Consensus Scientific committee, comprised of 106 members from 21 countries, conducted an in-depth literature review and reached recommendations regarding ideal graft-to-recipient weight ratios, monitoring portal pressure and flow, and diagnosing SFSS around postoperative day 7.
  • * The committee proposed a new 3-grade severity stratification system to help clinicians identify patients at risk for SFSS early on, suggesting that further studies are necessary to validate this system.

Background: Free tissue transfers for reconstruction following tongue resection has become standard practice.

Purpose: This study sought to evaluate volume shrinkage of the anterolateral thigh free (ALTF) reconstructing tongue defects at 6 months postoperative. The aim was to estimate a shrinkage factor for ALTF reconstructing hemi and total glossectomy.

The three-dimensional (3D) evaluation of skeletal stability after orthognathic surgery is a time-consuming and complex procedure. The complexity increases further when evaluating the surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA). Herein, we propose and validate a simple time-saving method of 3D analysis using a single software, demonstrating high accuracy and repeatability.

Using traditional measures to assess mandibular stability after the surgery-first approach (SFA) may produce inaccurate results because unlike the conventional orthodontic-first approach (OFA), the main dental movements occur after surgery in SFA, which produce unavoidable mandibular movements, especially in cases with postsurgical premature dental contact. As these movements are part of the surgical-orthodontic plan, they should not be considered an actual relapse. In this study, to avoid postsurgical dental movement effects, the authors used the relationship between proximal and distal mandibular segments to evaluate stability after SFA.

Background: Abdominal contouring is a common procedure after bariatric surgery, but few studies on its outcomes have been conducted. The authors measured surgical and functional outcomes after postbariatric abdominal contouring and their effects on quality of life.

Methods: Thirty patients, male and female, of different age groups, underwent postbariatric abdominal contouring using traditional abdominoplasty, fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty, or belt lipectomy.

Massive weight loss (MWL) is a very common presentation that you may face as a plastic surgeon. Each patient has his own individual criteria, so, you should work according to a well-organized plan, especially when such cases have concerns about their gluteal area contour that were neglected before by many surgeons. A decision-making strategy was used to give a personalized treatment for targeting gluteal region reshaping of MWL patients.

Unlabelled: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway is a multimodal perioperative care pathway designed to achieve early recovery after surgery. ERAS protocols have not yet been well recognized in kidney transplantation. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of ERAS pathway on early recovery and short-term clinical outcomes of kidney transplant.

Unlabelled: Living donor robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) is an alternative to open kidney transplantation (OKT), but experience with this technique is limited in the United States.

Methods: A retrospective review of living donor kidney transplants performed between 2016 and 2018 compared RAKT with OKT with regard to recipient, donor, and perioperative parameters. A 1:1 propensity score matching was performed on recipient/donor age, sex, body mass index, race, preoperative dialysis, and calculated panel reactive antibodies.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive, cholestatic liver disease, and liver transplantation (LT) is considered the only therapeutic option for patients with end-stage liver disease secondary to PSC. Intestinal obstruction in adults after LT surgery is a rare complication with diverse clinical presentations. The most common etiology is intestinal adhesions, but this can also result from other rare causes such as enterolith.

Dynamic shading systems in buildings help reduce solar gain. Actuated systems, which depend on renewable energy with reduced mechanical parts, further reduce building energy consumption compared to traditional interactive systems. This paper investigates stimuli-responsive polymer application in architectural products for sustainable energy consumption, complying with sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins are the most used thermosetting polymers. They are commonly used in electronics, construction, marine, automotive and aircraft industries. Moreover, reinforcing both epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins with carbon or glass fibre in a fabric form has enabled them to be used in high-performance applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Intestinal transplantation is a potential solution for children with permanent intestinal failure, and a study was conducted to analyze long-term survival rates of grafts in pediatric patients from 2003 to 2013.
  • The study found that 5-year and 10-year graft survival rates were 71% and 65%, with better outcomes seen in patients with anatomic intestinal failure compared to those with functional failure.
  • Key factors associated with better graft survival included fewer complications like graft-versus-host disease and lower donor-recipient weight ratios, indicating that avoiding severe complications is crucial for post-transplant success.

The success of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy has led to near-universal cure for patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and improved post-liver transplant (LT) outcomes. We investigated the trends and outcomes of retransplantation in HCV and non-HCV patients before and after the introduction of DAA. Adult patients who underwent re-LT were identified in the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing database.

There is a paucity of data on long-term outcomes following visceral transplantation in the contemporary era. This is a single-center retrospective analysis of all visceral allograft recipients who underwent transplant between November 2003 and December 2013 with at least 3-year follow-up data. Clinical data from a prospectively maintained database were used to assess outcomes including patient and graft survival.

This study aims to detect the potential impact of chemotherapy on the coronary calcium scoring (CCS) in lymphoma patients undergoing FDG-PET/CT at baseline and for therapy response using the CT portion of the exam to calculate the CCS. One hundred twelve lymphoma patients were included in the study based on having both baseline and at least 2 post-chemotherapy scans. The unenhanced CT portions of the scans were reviewed to measure the CCS which was then extracted using the Toshiba Vital Program.
