Blindness or vision loss due to neuroretinal and photoreceptor degeneration affects millions of individuals worldwide. In numerous neurodegenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, dysregulated immune response-mediated retinal degeneration has been found to play a critical role in the disease pathogenesis. The proteome of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans HK1651 (JP2 clone) and immunoreactive antigens were studied by two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis, matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), and 2D immunoblotting. The highly leukotoxic JP2 clone of A. actinomycetemcomitans is strongly associated with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) in adolescents of North-West African descent and the pathogenicity of this bacterium is of major interest.
