Purpose: To assess the efficacy of adding Ahmed's sub-flap mattress suture to deep sclerectomy (DS).

Methods: Forty eyes with open angle glaucoma were assigned randomly into two groups: Group A: underwent DS with Ahmed's sub-flap mattress suture. Group B: underwent conventional DS.

An integrated remote sensing, petrology, and field geology analyses for Neoproterozoic basement rocks in some parts of the southern Egyptian-Nubian Shield.

The main objective of this study was to use deep learning, and convolutional neural networks (CNN), integrated with field geology to identify distinct lithological units. The Samadia-Tunduba region of the South Eastern Desert of Egypt was mapped geologically for the first time thanks to the use of processed developed CNN algorithms using Landsat 9 OLI-2, which were further enhanced by geological fieldwork, spectral measurements of field samples, and petrographic examination. According to previously published papers, a significant difference was observed in the distribution of rocks and their boundaries, as well as the previously published geological maps that were not accurately compatible with the nature of the area.

MicroRNA-29a and microRNA-122 expressions and other inflammatory markers among obese children with diabetes.

Objectives: This study was conducted to study the expression of both microRNA-29a and microRNA-122, and serum levels of sestrin-2, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and other inflammatory markers among obese children with/and without diabetes mellitus.

Methods: One hundred obese children with diabetes in addition to 100 age- and sex-matched obese children without diabetes, and 100 age- and sex-matched apparently healthy children were included in the study. Expressions of both microRNA-29a and microRNA-122, and serum levels of sestrin-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and high sensitive-CRP (hsCRP) were measured for all included study populations.

Virtual learning in maxillofacial surgery in the post-COVID world: where are we now?

During the COVID-19 pandemic we developed a post-graduate virtual learning environment (PGVLE) in the West Midlands region for higher trainees in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We continued to develop this following the pandemic and sought to examine the trainee experience with this resource as restrictions eased. The PGVLE comprises a total of nine semesters mapping General Medical Council (GMC) learning objectives in the specialty across a total of 63 events using BigBlueButton™.

Multispectral imaging, such as ASTER and Sentinel-2 satellite data, provides a cost-effective and efficient tool for lithological and hydrothermal alteration mapping utilizing selective band ratios (SBR), directed principal component analysis (DPCA), feature-oriented false-color composites (FFCC), and constrained energy minimization (CEM).

Synthesis, crystal structure and phase transitions of novel hybrid perovskite: bis(1,2-diaminopropane) di-μ-chloro-bis[diaquadichloromanganate(II)] dichloride.

Single crystals of bis(1,2-diaminepropane) di-μ-chloro-bis[diaquadichloromanganate(II)] dichloride have been prepared by evaporation from ethanoic solution. The triclinic X-ray crystal structure is built as layers of centrosymmetric dimers of [Mn(Cl)(HO)] octahedra and 1,2-diaminopropane. The inorganic part consists of Mn octahedra sharing one edge and distributed in the basal ac plane along the a direction.

The Clinical Role of Diffusion-Weighted MRI for Detecting Residual Cholesteatoma in Canal Wall up Mastoidectomy.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the value of the diffusion MRI with the non-echoplanar imaging (Non-EPI) technique for follow-up the post-operative patients to detect residual cholesteatomas.

Study Design: This prospective study was performed on 40 patients. All patients were at least one year after Canal Wall Up mastoidectomy surgery for cholesteatoma and scheduled for a second-look surgery.

Potential of the common facial vein as a recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Recipient vessel selection for free flap reconstruction depends on numerous factors and may be limited due to previous treatment. Currently, little evidence is available regarding the anatomy and reconstructive potential of the common facial vein (CFV), a tributary of the internal jugular vein (IJV). The aim of this project was to determine the diameter of the CFV at various points along its course and identify suitable landmarks to locate the CFV, to consider the vessel as a potential recipient vein in free flap reconstruction.

Serum Galanin in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Recent studies have attempted to measure several biomarkers to understand the complex interactions of the anatomic systems that may be involved in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In CNS, galanin takes part in a variety of pathological and physiological processes. Prior research has indicated it is involved in several neuropsychiatric disorders and has a role in inhibiting the neuronal firing and release of serotonin, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine.

Juvenile Open-angle Glaucoma With Waardenburg Syndrome: A Case Report.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder resulting in anomalies of derivatives of neural crest cells during development. Patients tend to have variable degrees of pigmentary defects affecting skin, hair, and irides in addition to hearing loss and possible systemic neurological associations. Elevation of the intraocular pressure has been reported in several adult patients with WS.

In this work the crystal structure by single crystal X-ray measurement and optical properties of 1D propane-1,2-diammonium pentachlorobismuthate [NHCHCH(NH)CH]BiCl organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite are presented. It is prepared by mixing ethanolic solution of equimolar ratios (1:1) of its basic components. The title compound crystallized in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pca2 with Z = 8 molecules per unit cell.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective evaluation of patients admitted with COVID-19 to one site in March 2020. Patients were stratified into 3 groups: survivors who did not receive mechanical ventilation (MV), survivors who received MV, and those who received MV and died during hospitalization.

Polymorphism of interleukin-1β and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist genes in children with autism spectrum disorders.

In this study, we first investigated interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) levels in a cohort of Egyptian children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and in healthy controls. Second, we examined the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at positions -31 and - 511 of the IL-1β gene promoter and IL1RA and assessed the association between IL1B and IL1RA polymorphisms with ASD. We examined IL1β promoter polymorphism at -511 (IL-1β-511) and - 31 (IL-1β-31) and IL1RA gene polymorphism in 80 children with ASD and 60 healthy children.

Are Patients with Vitiligo More Prone to Myocardial Infarction?: A Case-control Study.

Vitiligo is a multifactorial polygenic disorder commonly associated with other autoimmune diseases. The reported link between vitiligo and abnormalities of serum interleukin (IL)-17, zinc, calcium, and vitamin D is not fully understood. We sought to assess the serum levels of vitamin D, calcium, zinc, and IL-17 in patients with vitiligo and to answer the question of whether patients with vitiligo are more prone to experience myocardial infarction.

Comparative analysis for optimizing the modified release tacrolimus (Advagraf) after kidney transplantation: A prospective randomized trial.

Immunosuppression management in clinical transplantation aims to balance delivery of efficacy against adverse reactions using therapeutic drug monitoring. Adherence to posttransplant immunosuppressive medications and minimizing variability in drug exposure are important considerations in preventing rejection and maximizing overall transplant outcomes. The availability of once-daily tacrolimus may add a potential benefit by simplifying immunosuppressive regimens, though improving compliance among transplant recipients.

Perioperative Thromboelastometry for Adult Living Donor Liver Transplant Recipients with a Tendency to Hypercoagulability: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

Background: Hypercoagulability can lead to serious thromboembolic events. The aim of this study was to assess the perioperative coagulation status in liver transplant recipients with a tendency to hypercoagulability.

Methods: In a prospective observational study (South African Cochrane Registry 201405000814129), 151 potential liver transplant recipients were screened for thrombophilic factors from October 2014 to June 2017, and 57 potential recipients fulfilled the inclusion criterion of presenting two or more of the following thrombophilic factors: low protein C, low protein S, low anti-thrombin, increased homocystein, increased antiphospholipid IgG/IgM antibodies, increased lupus anticoagulant, and positive Factor V Leiden mutation.

Enhanced Recovery Open vs Laparoscopic Left Donor Nephrectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: To compare recovery outcomes between laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) and open donor nephrectomy within a specified enhanced recovery program (ERP) for left kidney donations.

Patients And Methods: A phase III randomized trial was conducted between January 2013 and June 2015; eligible left-side donors were randomized to laparoscopic or open donor nephrectomy in a 1:1 ratio with recovery optimized within a standardized ERP. The primary outcome was patient-reported measure of physical fatigue, as measured by the physical fatigue domain of the translated Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20.

Frequency of Dendritic Cells and Their Expression of Costimulatory Molecules in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequencies of myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in children with ASD. Subjects were 32 children with ASD and 30 healthy children as controls. The numbers of mDCs and pDCs and the expression of CD86 and CD80 on the entire DCs were detected by flow cytometry.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy and sensitivity of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with ADC value combined with MDCT in evaluating recurrent cholesteatoma.

Patients: Thirty patients (20 females and 10 males), their age ranged from 10 to 40years, had undergone a tympanomastoid surgery for a cholesteatoma of the middle ear underwent MDCT and MR DWI examination before second- or third-look surgery from May 2015 to October 2016.

Results: CT showed partial opacification of the tympanomastoid cavity in 10 ears and complete opacification in 21 ears.

Randomized controlled trial of vitamin D supplementation in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a frequent developmental disorder characterized by pervasive deficits in social interaction, impairment in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped patterns of interests and activities. It has been previously reported that there is vitamin D deficiency in autistic children; however, there is a lack of randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in ASD children.

Methods: This study is a double-blinded, randomized clinical trial (RCT) that was conducted on 109 children with ASD (85 boys and 24 girls; aged 3-10 years).

Outdoor aerosol particles were characterized in industrial area of Samalut city (El-minia/Egypt) using low pressure Berner cascade impactor as an aerosol sampler. The impactor operates at 1.7 m(3)/h flow rate.

Urinothorax: a rare finding after urinary intervention.

Introduction: We report a case in our center of unilateral urinothorax that occurred post percutaneous nephrolithotomy as a rare cause of pleural effusion and acute dyspnea.

Methods: Report of a case.

Results: Initial chest CT showed massive left sided pleural effusion from which biochemical investigations revealed exudative effusion and urinothorax.
