Introduction: Dissection or rupture of the aorta is accompanied by high mortality rates, and there is a pressing need for better prediction of these events for improved patient management and clinical outcomes. Biomechanically, these events represent a situation wherein the locally acting wall stress exceed the local tissue strength. Fabricating dispersed single atoms and size-controlled metal nanoclusters remains a difficult challenge due to sintering. Here, we demonstrate that atoms and clusters can be immobilized using atomically clean defect-engineered graphene as the matrix. The graphene is first cleaned of surface contamination with laser heating, after which low-energy Ar irradiation is used to create spatially well-separated vacancies into it.

We report the formation of nanobubbles on graphene with a radius of the order of 1 nm, using ultralow energy implantation of noble gas ions (He, Ne, Ar) into graphene grown on a Pt(111) surface. We show that the universal scaling of the aspect ratio, which has previously been established for larger bubbles, breaks down when the bubble radius approaches 1 nm, resulting in much larger aspect ratios. Moreover, we observe that the bubble stability and aspect ratio depend on the substrate onto which the graphene is grown (bubbles are stable for Pt but not for Cu) and trapped element.

Using a magnetron sputtering approach that allows size-controlled formation of nanoclusters, we have created palladium nanoclusters that combine the features of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Here we report the atomic structures and electronic environments of a series of metal nanoclusters in ionic liquids at different stages of formation, leading to the discovery of Pd nanoclusters with a core of ca. 2 nm surrounded by a diffuse dynamic shell of atoms in [CCIm][NTf].

Graphene can acquire salient properties by the intercalated nano structures, and to functionalize the graphene as designed, understanding the growth kinetics of the nano structures is a prerequisite. Patients suffering from the progressive neurodegenerative disease Friedreich's ataxia have reduced expression levels of the protein frataxin. Three major isoforms of human frataxin have been identified, FXN42-210, FXN56-210 and FXN81-210, of which FXN81-210 is considered to be the mature form. Both long forms, FXN42-210 and FXN56-210, have been shown to spontaneously form oligomeric particles stabilized by the extended N-terminal sequence.

Ion irradiation of metal supported two-dimensional layers results over a broad parameter space in noble gas trapping at the interface of the two-dimensional layer and the metal substrate. Trapping may give rise to the formation of gas filled blisters which deteriorate the structural and electronic properties of graphene. Fe-S clusters, essential cofactors needed for the activity of many different enzymes, are assembled by conserved protein machineries inside bacteria and mitochondria. As the architecture of the human machinery remains undefined, we co-expressed in Escherichia coli the following four proteins involved in the initial step of Fe-S cluster synthesis: FXN (iron donor); [NFS1]·[ISD11] (sulfur donor); and ISCU (scaffold upon which new clusters are assembled). We purified a stable, active complex consisting of all four proteins with 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry.

We report on the growth and formation of single-layer boron nitride dome-shaped nanostructures mediated by small iron clusters located on flakes of hexagonal boron nitride. The nanostructures were synthesized in situ at high temperature inside a transmission electron microscope while the e-beam was blanked. The formation process, typically originating at defective step-edges on the boron nitride support, was investigated using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and computational modelling.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional design and archived samples, we compared concentrations of plasma homocysteine and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neurofilament light protein (NFL), a sensitive marker of neuronal injury, in 83 HIV-1-infected subjects without antiretroviral treatment. We also analyzed plasma vitamin B12, serum folate, CSF, and plasma HIV RNA, the immune activation marker neopterin in CSF and serum, and albumin ratio as a marker of blood-brain barrier integrity.

This paper presents a modeling comparison on how stabilization of global climate change at about 2 °C above the pre-industrial level could affect economic and energy systems development in China and India. Seven General Equilibrium (CGE) and energy system models on either the global or national scale are soft-linked and harmonized with respect to population and economic assumptions. We simulate a climate regime, based on long-term convergence of per capita carbon dioxide (CO) emissions, starting from the emission pledges presented in the Copenhagen Accord to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and allowing full emissions trading between countries.

We expose epitaxial graphene (Gr) on Ir(111) to low-energy noble gas ion irradiation and investigate by scanning tunneling microscopy and atomistic simulations the behavior of C atoms detached from Gr due to ion impacts. Consistent with our density functional theory calculations, upon annealing Gr nanoplatelets nucleate at the Gr/Ir(111) interface from trapped C atoms initially displaced with momentum toward the substrate. Making use of the nanoplatelet formation phenomenon, we measure the trapping yield as a function of ion energy and species and compare the values to those obtained using molecular dynamics simulations.
