: As the anti-biofilm pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) properties of antibiotics are not well-defined, we have evaluated the PK/PD indices for different regimens of ceftazidime (CAZ; with/without colistin) against biofilm. : We have used the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Biofilm Reactor with two susceptible (PAO1 and HUB-PAS) and one resistant (HUB-XDR) strains of . The regimens were CAZ monotherapies (mimicking a human dose of 2 g/8 h, CAZ-IB; 6 g/daily as continuous infusion at 50 mg/L, CAZ-CI; and 9 g/daily at 70 mg/L, CAZ-CI) and CAZ-colistin combinations.

Since the start of the pandemic, the tissue donation in Catalonia (Spain) has decreased drastically. At the beginning of the lockdown (from March to May 2020) there was a drop of around 70% in donation of corneas and of approximately 90% in donation of placentas. Despite the fast updating of standard operating procedures, we had big difficulties in different points.

Purpose: To investigate the tolerability, security and long-term efficacy of lyophilized amniotic membrane (LAM) as an alternative to cryopreserved amniotic membrane in pterygium surgery.

Material And Methods: Prospective case series of patients with primary nasal pterygium who undergone pterygium surgery and LAM implant either with sutures or glue. Postoperative follow-up was until month 24.

Introduction: Our tissue establishment developed a protocol for processing amniotic membranes as extracts to be re-hydrated and administered topically as eye drops, becoming a new approach to treat severe ocular surface pathologies. From 2015 to 2017 the safety and efficacy of the amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEED) were assessed in patients with severe ocular surface pathologies through clinical follow-up of ocular surface symptoms before and after regular application of the extract.Between 2018 and 2019 a study of 36 patients (50 eyes) treated with topical AMEED was conducted comparing 2 groups of patients: Dry Eye Disease (DED) and Wound Healing Delay (WHD) showing global similar symptomatic improvement in both groups (DED 88.

The Barcelona Tissue Bank was established from the merge of two previous multi-tissue banks. Potential donors are screened by Donor Center staff and multi-tissue retrieval is performed by specialized own teams. Tissue processing and preservation is performed in clean room facilities by specialised personnel.

Purpose: To study the indications and clinical outcomes, in a real-word setting, of amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEED) use for ocular surface disease (OSD).

Methods: A retrospective study of patients treated with topical AMEED between January 2018 and January 2020 was conducted. Patients were classified in two groups according to specific OSD-dry eye disease (DED) and wound healing delay (WHD) groups.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study focused on scaling up a small cardiac tissue engineering construct, known as PeriCord, into a human-size therapeutic product to aid post-heart attack recovery in patients.
  • - PeriCord is made from a decellularised pericardial matrix and contains human stem cells, with tests confirming its quality and safety before it was implanted in a patient with significant heart damage.
  • - The first implantation in a 63-year-old male showed promising results, with no adverse reactions or need for immunosuppression, and a notable reduction in the heart scar observed after three months.

Purpose: To evaluate if the dose equivalent to 2 Gy per fraction (EQD2) at 0.1 cm, 1 cm, and 2 cm of vagina in vaginal-cuff-brachytherapy (VBT) (high-dose-rate [HDR] Ir-source) ± external-beam-irradiation (EBRT) is associated with toxicity in post-operative endometrial carcinoma (P-EC).

Material And Methods: From June 2014 till November 2015, 67 consecutive P-EC patients underwent VBT ± EBRT; 44 patients received EBRT (median, 45 Gy; range, 44-50.

The detection of metabolic syndrome (MS) is use ful for identifying individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The objectives of the study were to describe the prevalence of MS in employees 40-65 years old, utilizing different definitions and to analyze the relation with educational level and gender by means of cross-sectional and multicenter study of different regions of Argentina. Compared MS definitions were: International Diabetes Federation, American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and National Cholesterol Education Program - Adults Treatment Panel III.

The Health, Social Health and Public Healthcare Map of Catalonia is an instrument that provides criteria for putting into operation the policies and strategies defined by the Health Plan and the Master Plans and Strategic Plans of the Department of Health. The effectiveness of the Map is determined by its capacity to help in decision making at the different organisational and management levels. The principal operational fields are, operations planning, territorial healthcare governments and cross-sector relationships.

Objective: To obtain images of the articular surface of osteochondral grafts (fresh, frozen, and cryopreserved in RPMI) using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). To evaluate and compare the main morphological aspects of the chondral surface of the fresh, frozen, and cryopreserved grafts as visualized via ESEM.

Methods: The study was based on osteochondral fragments from the internal condyle of the knee joint of New Zealand rabbits, corresponding to the chondral surface from fresh, frozen, and cryopreserved samples.

Background: The number of revascularization procedures including coronary and lower extremity bypass, have increased greatly in the last decade. It suggests a growing need for vascular grafts. Cryopreserved allografts could represent a viable alternative but their immunologic reactivity remains controversial.

Unlabelled: The need for arterial grafts in coronary surgery to complement autologous vessels has generated interest in cryopreservation of small diameter allografts. We evaluated functional and histologic changes occurring in cryopreserved allografts 3 months after porcine femoral artery transplants.

Methods: Twenty recipient and 15 donor pigs included a control group of 16 fresh and 12 cryopreserved nonimplant arteries were used.

Whilst the pulmonary valve is a tricuspid valve, very few reports exist of bicuspid pulmonary valves, the majority of which are associated with congenital heart disease. Isolated bicuspid valves not associated with congenital abnormalities are even more rare. Herein, the case is described of a 65-year-old man who died from a stroke, and in whom a bicuspid pulmonary valve was found during post-mortem dissection for tissue donation.

Background: Research aimed at developing artificial liver support systems has experienced a notable increase in the last decade. Hybrid systems including bioreactors containing hepatocytes which are perfused by liver failure patients blood or plasma have been deviced for the first time. The purpose of such a strategy is to substitute, at least in part, the impaired hepatic function thus improving the prognosis of patients with severe acute or chronic liver diseases.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to design an adequate technique with which to cryopreserve pig femoral arteries and to assess the influence of storage times in vascular function.

Methods: Fifty-two femoral arteries were distributed in seven groups. In group A (control), 10 arteries were studied after harvest; in groups B1 and B2, 19 arteries were suspended in RPMI 1640 plus fetal calf serum plus dimethylsulfoxide and were cryopreserved at 1 degrees C per minute or 0.

Sangre de Grado extract used by Peruvian natives as a cicatrizant agent, was collected from trees of the species Croton lechleri growing in the Peruvian jungle. The Sangre de Grado was found to contain one alkaloid identified as taspine and which was shown to be the active cicatrizant principle by an in vivo test in mice. This alkaloid exhibited a dose-related cicatrizant effect and an ED50 of 0.
