Predictors of major infections in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Introduction: Infections commonly complicate the course of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Our aim is to investigate the clinical predictors of major infections in patients with SLE.

Methods: A nested case-control study design was used within the prospective Lupus-Cruces cohort.

Mechanism of the far-infrared absorption of carbon-nanotube films.

The far-infrared conductivity of single-wall carbon-nanotube ensembles is dominated by a broad absorption peak around 4 THz whose origin is still debated. We observe an overall depletion of this peak when the nanotubes are excited by a short visible laser pulse. This finding excludes optical absorption due to a particle-plasmon resonance and instead shows that interband transitions in tubes with an energy gap of approximately 10 meV dominate the far-infrared conductivity.

Postanesthetic brachial triceps myonecrosis in a Spanish-bred horse.

This report describes a case of postanesthetic brachial triceps myonecrosis affecting only the left forelimb of a horse. A fatal unilateral postanesthetic myonecrosis has not been previously reported in the horse. This article describes the factors in the horse's history, the anesthetic protocol, and the treatment that may have led to this condition.

Prevalence of CYP2C9 polymorphisms in the south of Europe.

CYP2C9 is a major liver enzyme responsible of the metabolism of many clinically important drugs. The presence of CYP2C9 genetic polymorphisms has been associated with marked interindividual variability in its catalytic activity that could result in drug toxicity. Carbon nanotubes as injection electrodes for organic thin film transistors.

We have investigated the charge injection efficiency of carbon nanotube electrodes for organic semiconducting layers and compared their performance to that of traditional noble metal electrodes. Due to the many similarities in mechanisms of action, targets and effects, progesterone (P4), estrogen and neurotrophins have been implicated in synaptic plasticity as well as in neuroprotection and neurodegeneration. In this study, we examined the interactions between 17beta-estradiol (E2) and P4 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on both plasticity and excitotoxicity in rat cultured hippocampal slices. Computed tomographic anatomy of the temporomandibular joint in the young horse.

Reasons For Performing Study: The equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its surrounding structures can be difficult to investigate in cases with a clinical problem related to the region. Little previous attention has been given either to a computed tomographic (CT) imaging protocol for the joint or an interpretation of the structures displayed in CT images of the normal joint.

Synthesis of cephalexin in aqueous medium with carrier-bound and carrier-free penicillin acylase biocatalysts.

The use of very high substrate concentrations favors the kinetically controlled synthesis of cephalexin with penicillin acylase (PA) not only by Michaelian considerations, but also because water activity is depressed, so reducing the rates of the competing reactions of product and acyl donor hydrolysis. Commercial PGA-450, glyoxyl agarose immobilized (PAIGA) and carrier-free cross-linked enzyme aggregates of penicillin acylase (PACLEA) were tested in aqueous media at concentrations close to the solubility of nucleophile and at previously determined enzyme to nucleophile and acid donor to nucleophile ratios. The best temperature and pH were determined for each biocatalyst based on an objective function considering conversion yield, productivity, and enzyme stability as evaluation parameters.

Electroluminescence from single-wall carbon nanotube network transistors.

The electroluminescence (EL) properties from single-wall carbon nanotube network field-effect transistors (NNFETs) and small bundle carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNFETs) are studied using spectroscopy and imaging in the near-infrared (NIR). At room temperature, NNFETs produce broad (approximately 180 meV) and structured NIR spectra, while they are narrower (approximately 80 meV) for CNFETs. EL emission from NNFETs is located in the vicinity of the minority carrier injecting contact (drain) and the spectrum of the emission is red shifted with respect to the corresponding absorption spectrum.

Upper limit on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy tau neutrinos from the Pierre Auger Observatory.

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to Earth-skimming tau neutrinos that interact in Earth's crust. Tau leptons from nu(tau) charged-current interactions can emerge and decay in the atmosphere to produce a nearly horizontal shower with a significant electromagnetic component. The data collected between 1 January 2004 and 31 August 2007 are used to place an upper limit on the diffuse flux of nu(tau) at EeV energies.

Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of Prunus salicina.

We report Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation of two Prunus salicina varieties, 'Angeleno' and 'Larry Anne', using a modification of the hypocotyl slice technique previously described for P. domestica. Regeneration rates on thidiazuron (TDZ) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) supplemented Murashige and Skoog (MS) media reached 11% for 'Angeleno' and 19% for 'Larry Anne' hypocotyl slices.

Age-related changes in the expression of schizophrenia susceptibility genes in the human prefrontal cortex.

The molecular basis of complex neuropsychiatric disorders most likely involves many genes. In recent years, specific genetic variations influencing risk for schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders have been reported. We have used custom DNA microarrays and qPCR to investigate the expression of putative schizophrenia susceptibility genes and related genes of interest in the normal human brain.

Vitamin D deficiency in systemic lupus erythematosus: prevalence, predictors and clinical consequences.

Objectives: We aimed to establish the prevalence, predictors and clinical consequences of vitamin D deficiency in patients with SLE.

Methods: Cross-sectional study including patients fulfilling ACR criteria for the classification of SLE. Serum 25(OH)D levels at 30 and 10 ng/ml were the cut-off values for vitamin D insufficiency and vitamin D deficiency, respectively.

Effect of the dietary fat quality on insulin sensitivity.

Recent evidence shows that specific fatty acids affect cell metabolism, modifying the balance between fatty acid oxidation and lipogenesis. These effects may have important implications in addressing the present epidemic of nutrition-related chronic disease. Intake of dietary saturated and n-6 PUFA have increased while n-3 fatty acid intake has decreased.

Factors predicting hospital readmissions related to adverse drug reactions.

Objective: To analyse the contribution of adverse drug reactions (ADR) to hospital readmissions.

Methods: This was a case-control study in which unscheduled admissions of patients who had been admitted to the hospital during the two previous months were assessed during a 21-month period. The patient was considered a case when the main diagnosis of readmission complied with the World Health Organisation's definition of an ADR.

Kidney graft survival in patients with hepatitis C: a single center experience.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is highly prevalent in renal transplant candidates; however, its effect on the transplant outcome is still controversial. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of HCV infection in the outcome of kidney transplantation in a single transplant center. The study population 144 HCV- randomized selected patients and 64 HCV+ patients transplanted from 1973 to 2000, followed for up to 60 months post-transplantation.

The CK1 gene family: expression patterning in zebrafish development.

Protein kinase CK1 is a ser/thr protein kinase family which has been identified in the cytosol cell fraction, associated with membranes as well as in the nucleus. Several isoforms of this gene family have been described in various organisms: CK1alpha, CK1beta, CK1delta, CK1epsilon and CK1gamma. Over the last decade, several members of this family have been involved in development processes related to wnt and sonic hedgehog signalling pathways.

Plasma arachidonic acid influences insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in healthy adult women.

Background: Fatty acids can modulate lipid metabolism, this is related to insulin resistance (IR). This study evaluated the relationship of plasma fatty acid profile with IR, fuel oxidative metabolism and plasma lipid concentration in 'healthy' women.

Methods: Sixteen 'healthy', sedentary and non-obese women were evaluated under fasting conditions for fuel oxidation, plasma fatty acid profile, free fatty acids, triglycerides, glucose and insulin concentrations.

Correlation of the highest-energy cosmic rays with nearby extragalactic objects.

Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during the past 3.7 years, we demonstrated a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above 6 x 10(19) electron volts and the positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) lying within approximately 75 megaparsecs. We rejected the hypothesis of an isotropic distribution of these cosmic rays with at least a 99% confidence level from a prescribed a priori test.

Different sorption behaviors for wine polyphenols in contact with oak wood.

The evolution of polyphenols of enological interest- monomeric anthocyanins, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, gallic acid, and trans-resveratrol-in the presence of oak wood was investigated in aging-model conditions. Disappearance kinetics showed that, except for gallic acid, all of the wine polyphenols tend to disappear from the model wine in presence of oak wood, to reach an equilibrium after 20 days of contact. At equilibrium, the higher disappearance rates were obtained for monomeric anthocyanins and trans-resveratrol with values of 20 and 50%, respectively.
