Two extremely halophilic archaea, strains Al-5(T) and K-1, were isolated from Lake Tebenquiche (Atacama Saltern, Chile) and Ezzemoul sabkha (Algeria), respectively. Cells of the two strains were short-rod-shaped and Gram-negative; colonies were orange-pigmented. They grew optimally at 37-40 degrees C and pH 7.

Working memory has been described as a neurocognitive probe of prefrontal brain functioning. Genetic variability related with catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene (Val158Met polymorphism) has received increasing attention as a possible modulator of working memory tasks in both schizophrenic patients and healthy subjects, although inconsistencies across studies have been found. This may be related to the existence of different working memory components, processes and modalities, which may have different sensitivities to subtle changes in dopamine levels and, therefore, the effect of the underlying COMT Val158Met genetic variability.

A novel moderately halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Halomonas was isolated from brine samples collected from Ezzemoul sabkha in north-eastern Algeria. The cells of strain 5-3(T) were Gram-negative, rod-shaped and non-motile. The strain was catalase- and oxidase-positive and produced an exopolysaccharide.

Materials And Methods: We conducted an epidemiological survey in a sample of 19,039 patients with hypertension who consecutively attended a primary healthcare center. Patients were considered to have hypertension if the BP was > or =140/90 mmHg or > or =130/80 mmHg in diabetic patients or if they were undergoing pharmacological treatment for hypertension.
A total of 10 bacterial strains were isolated from a compost of corn treated with olive mill wastewaters (OMW) and selected by their capacity to synthesize exopolysaccharides (EPS). Morphological, physiological, biochemical and nutritional tests were used for a phenotypic study. A numerical analysis showed that all strains were 90% similar to each other.

Thirty-three pestiviruses isolated from bovines on different farms in Chile were characterized at the molecular level. The 5'-untranslated region (5'UTR) of the isolates was amplified by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and subsequently digested with restriction enzymes (RE) Bgl I, Xho I and Pst I. Furthermore, the isolates were amplified by differential RT-PCR, which selectively amplified bovine viral diarrhea virus type 2 (BVDV-2) but not bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 (BVDV-1).
