Point defects in crystalline solids behave as optically addressable individual quantum systems when present in sufficiently low concentrations. In two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, such quantum defects hold potential as versatile single photon sources. Excitons (coupled electron-hole pairs) in semiconductors can form collective states that sometimes exhibit spectacular nonlinear properties. Here, we show experimental evidence of a collective state of short-lived excitons in a direct-bandgap, atomically thin MoS semiconductor whose propagation resembles that of a classical liquid as suggested by the nearly uniform photoluminescence through the MoS monolayer regardless of crystallographic defects and geometric constraints. Presented here is an experimental ischemic stroke study using our newly developed noninvasive imaging system that integrates three acoustic-based imaging technologies: photoacoustic, ultrasound, and angiographic tomography (PAUSAT). Combining these three modalities helps acquire multi-spectral photoacoustic tomography (PAT) of the brain blood oxygenation, high-frequency ultrasound imaging of the brain tissue, and acoustic angiography of the cerebral blood perfusion. The multi-modal imaging platform allows the study of cerebral perfusion and oxygenation changes in the whole mouse brain after stroke.

The underlying etiologies of seizures are highly heterogeneous and remain incompletely understood. While studying the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways in the brain, we unexpectedly discovered that transgenic mice (XBP1s-TG) expressing spliced X-box-binding protein-1 (Xbp1s), a key effector of UPR signaling, in forebrain excitatory neurons, rapidly develop neurologic deficits, most notably recurrent spontaneous seizures. This seizure phenotype begins around 8 days after Xbp1s transgene expression is induced in XBP1s-TG mice, and by approximately 14 days post induction, the seizures evolve into status epilepticus with nearly continuous seizure activity followed by sudden death.

This work presents a methodology for the optimal reconfiguration of a distribution network in the presence of a failure, through a multicriteria optimization algorithm. For this purpose, the optimal network reconfiguration alternative is verified in the IEEE 33 bus test system and 123 bus test system. The variables analyzed within the multicriteria decision matrix include the total interruption time per nominal kVA installed (TITK), mean frequency of interruption per nominal kVA installed (MFIK), reset time for reconfiguration, energy not supplied, total losses in the lines of the system and operation and maintenance costs.

We present an ischemic stroke study using our newly-developed PAUSAT system that integrates photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), high-frequency ultrasound imaging, and acoustic angiographic tomography. The central nervous system microRNA miR-138-5p has attracted much attention in cancer research because it inhibits pro-apoptotic genes including CASP3. We hypothesize that miR-138-5p downregulation after SCI leads to overexpression of pro-apoptotic genes, sensitizing neural cells to noxious stimuli. This study aimed to identify miR-138-5p targets among pro-apoptotic genes overexpressed following SCI and to confirm that miR-138-5p modulates cell death in neural cells.

Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) may improve respiratory and cardiovascular functions in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is a potential alternative or adjunct treatment to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). IMT protocols were originally designed for athletes, however, we found some OSA patients could not perform the exercise, so we aimed for a more OSA-friendly protocol. Our feasibility criteria included (1) participants successfully managing the technique at home; (2) participants completing daily practice sessions and recording data logs; and (3) capturing performance plateaus to determine an optimal length of the intervention.

This work presents a methodology for optimal compensation of reactive power in Electric Microgrids using a multicriteria decision algorithm based on heuristic methods. It was verified the optimal location and dimensioning of fixed capacitor banks in a microgrid with 14 buses with objective functions based on cost, efficiency and quality criteria in a maximum demand operating condition and also considering the constraints of objective variables in minimum demand scenarios. The proposed capacitance to be installed was considered as a discrete variable.
