In the present study, the proportion of IL-6 and IL-17 T cell subsets was higher in NMOSD patients than healthy individuals. The frequency of both T cell subsets were directly associated with disease activity.

In this work we developed two different strategies for the synthesis of intermediates used on the synthesis of levetiracetam/brivaracetam and ethambutol. The results obtained show that methionine methyl ester can be continuously converted to the desired ethambutol intermediate by RANEY® Nickel dessulfurization/reduction strategy whereas levetiracetam/brivaracetam intermediates could be synthesized by both RANEY® Nickel (without H2) and Pd/C-H2 approach or by photochemical desulfurization.

Impact of human cytomegalovirus on glioblastoma cell viability and chemotherapy treatment.

The relationship between human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and tumours has been extensively investigated, mainly in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a malignant tumour of the central nervous system with low overall survival rates. Several reports have demonstrated the presence of HCMV in GBM, although typically restricted to a low number of cells, and studies have indicated that viral proteins have the ability to dysregulate cellular processes and increase tumour malignancy. Treatment of GBM involves the use of the chemotherapeutic agents temozolomide (TMZ) and carmustine (bis-chloroethylnitrosourea, BCNU), which lead to the attachment of adducts to the DNA backbone, causing errors during replication and consequent cell death.

Recent global epidemics of viral infection such as Zika virus (ZIKV) and associated birth defects from maternal-fetal viral transmission highlights the critical unmet need for experimental models that adequately recapitulates the biology of the human maternal-fetal interface and downstream fetal development. Herein, we report an in vitro biomimetic placenta-fetus model of the maternal-fetal interface and downstream fetal cells. Using a tissue engineering approach, we built a 3D model incorporating placental trophoblast and endothelial cells into an extracellular matrix environment and validated formation of the maternal-fetal interface.
