Objectives: To assess the risk factors for development of late-onset invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) after kidney transplantation (KT).
Methods: We performed a multinational case-control study that retrospectively recruited 112 KT recipients diagnosed with IPA between 2000 and 2013. Controls were matched (1:1 ratio) by centre and date of transplantation.
During a visceral leishmaniasis outbreak in an area of Madrid, Spain, the incidence of disease among solid organ transplant recipients was 10.3% (7/68). Being a black person from sub-Saharan Africa, undergoing transplantation during the outbreak, and residing <1,000 m from the epidemic focus were risk factors for posttransplant visceral leishmaniasis.

We investigated the influence of molecular characteristics of MSSA strains on the risk of complicated bacteremia (CB) in MSSA-CRB. A multicenter prospective study was conducted in Spain between 2011 and 2014 on MSSA-CRB.

However, it is unknown if this phenomenon may also act as a risk factor for the development of infective endocarditis (IE).
Methods: We analysed 207 episodes of catheter-related (CR)-BSI recruited from June 2008 to December 2009 within a prospective study on MRSA BSI in 21 Spanish hospitals.
The use of vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) as an outcome predictor in patients with methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia has become an important topic for debate in the last few years. Given these previous results, we decided to investigate whether MICs to vancomycin or daptomycin had any effect on the evolution of patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) due to MSSA. An observational, retrospective, multicenter study was conducted among patients with MSSA VAP.

Objectives: To assess the presence of mutations associated with CMV resistance in SOT recipients with suspected resistance, their associated risk factors and the clinical impact of resistance.
Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to analyze the cost utility of a group-based form of acceptance and commitment therapy (GACT) in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) compared with patients receiving recommended pharmacological treatment (RPT) or on a waiting list (WL). The data were derived from a previously published study, a randomized controlled trial that focused on clinical outcomes. Health economic outcomes included health-related quality of life and health care use at baseline and at 6-month follow-up using the EuroQoL and the Client Service Receipt Inventory, respectively.

Methods: A multicenter study of adult patients with candidemia was conducted in 9 hospitals.
The DNA damage response (DDR) is a set of cellular events that follows the generation of DNA damage. Recently, site-specific small non-coding RNAs, also termed DNA damage response RNAs (DDRNAs), have been shown to play a role in DDR signalling and DNA repair. Dysfunctional telomeres activate DDR in ageing, cancer and an increasing number of identified pathological conditions.

We analysed the impact of fluconazole minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values, 24-hour area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) and AUC/MIC ratio on the outcome of candidemic patients.
Methods: We included 257 episodes of candidaemia treated with fluconazole monotherapy for ≥72 hours from a population-based surveillance conducted in 29 hospitals (CANDIPOP Project).
Background: The transmembrane glycoprotein CD30 contributes to regulate the balance between Th and Th responses. Previous studies have reported conflicting results on the utility of its soluble form (sCD30) to predict post-transplant infection.
Methods: Serum sCD30 was measured by a commercial ELISA assay at baseline and post-transplant months 1, 3, and 6 in 100 kidney transplant (KT) recipients (279 monitoring points).
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in emergency departments (ED), and at least 15% of them are bacteremic. However, there are few data on how to predict which patients are at high risk of developing bacteremic UTI (b-UTI). We performed a retrospective observational cohort study including patients diagnosed with UTI who were admitted to the ED of a tertiary-care hospital in Spain.

Compared to that in the general population, the frequency of tuberculosis (TB) is 10 to 40 times higher in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients and 20 to 74 times higher in solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Transplant recipients with TB are also more likely to develop disseminated disease, have longer time to definitive diagnosis, require more invasive diagnostic procedures, and experience greater anti-TB treatment-related toxicity than the general population.

We studied C3 recipient variants in 483 liver transplant patients by RT-PCR-HRM to determine their effect on graft outcome during the first year post-transplantation. Allograft survival was significantly decreased in C3FF recipients (C3SS 95% vs C3FS 91% vs C3FF 83%; P=.

Methods: This observational study enrolled 909 Asian adult inpatients and outpatients. The presence or absence of painful physical symptoms and severity of depression were assessed at baseline and after three months of treatment.
The incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) after solid organ transplantation (SOT) is increasing. The optimal therapy for post-transplant VL remains unclear, as relapses after liposomal amphotericin B (L-AmB) are common. Miltefosine has been shown to be effective for treating VL in immunocompetent patients, although data in the specific population of SOT recipients are lacking.

Recent evidence suggesting potential regulatory and antiviral effects of mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (mTORi) is of great interest. Although the concept of an immunosuppressive drug with antiviral properties is not new, little effort has been made to put the evidence together to assess the management of immunosuppressive therapy in the presence of a viral infection.

A growing number of studies suggest a major host genetic component in disease susceptibility. Here, we evaluated whether 14 single-nucleotide polymorphisms within NFκB1, NFκB2, RelA, RelB, Rel, and IRF4 genes influence the risk of IA in a population of 834 high-risk patients (157 IA and 677 non-IA) recruited through a collaborative effort involving the aspBIOmics consortium and four European clinical institutions.

Data on risk factors, clinical features, therapy, and outcome of episodes of fungemia due to rare (non-Candida, non-Cryptococcus) yeasts were analyzed in a population-based surveillance program conducted in 29 Spanish hospitals between May 2010 and April 2011. Species identification (DNA sequencing) and antifungal susceptibility testing (EUCAST and CLSI methods) were centrally performed.
