Background: To provide improved treatment for hallux valgus (HV), we sought to understand more about the pathophysiologic connection between flatfoot deformity and HV by comparing coronal plane alignment of the medial column of the foot for patients with isolated HV, isolated flatfoot, and combined HV-flatfoot vs controls.

Methods: This study retrospectively assessed a consecutive series of 33 patients with combined symptomatic and radiographic HV and flatfoot, 33 isolated symptomatic HV, 33 isolated symptomatic flatfoot, and 33 controls. The medial column alignment was assessed in the coronal plane using 3-dimensional weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT); rotation was measured for the navicular, medial cuneiform, and first metatarsal (M1).

Background And Objectives: Subpial corticectomy involving complete lesion resection while preserving pial membranes and avoiding injury to adjacent normal tissues is an essential bimanual task necessary for neurosurgical trainees to master. We sought to develop an ex vivo calf brain corticectomy simulation model with continuous assessment of surgical instrument movement during the simulation. A case series study of skilled participants was performed to assess face and content validity to gain insights into the utility of this training platform, along with determining if skilled and less skilled participants had statistical differences in validity assessment.

Background: To investigate the impact of decompressive chevron osteotomy on subchondral bone density at the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint.

Methods: Sixteen feet (12 patients) with hallux rigidus underwent decompressive chevron osteotomy. Standing cone beam 3D computed tomography (3DCT) were assessed preoperatively and at 4-month follow-up, and clinical data were collected.

is a bacteria responsible for many hospital-acquired infections. Phages are promising alternatives for treating infections, which are often intrinsically resistant. The combination of phage and antibiotics in clearing bacterial infection holds promise due to increasing reports of enhanced effectiveness when both are used together.

Purpose: To compare outcomes, between stemmed and stemless reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) at a minimum follow-up of 5 years.

Methods: The authors retrospectively assessed a consecutive series of 45 patients that underwent RSA between September 2014 and October 2018 (23 stemless and 22 stemmed). All patients underwent plain anteroposterior and scapular Y-view radiographs for assessment immediately post-operatively and at final follow-up.

is a gram-negative commensal bacterium living in human and animal intestines. Its pathogenic strains lead to high morbidity and mortality, which can adversely affect people by causing urinary tract infections, food poisoning, septic shock, or meningitis. Humans can contract by eating contaminated food-such as raw or undercooked raw milk, meat products, and fresh produce sold in open markets-as well as by coming into contact with contaminated settings like wastewater, municipal water, soil, and faeces.

Individual experiences, social policies, and environmental exposure shape beliefs, norms and ideologies about sexuality. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a school health club training programme in improving adolescents' knowledge and perceptions of gender norms and ideologies about sexuality. This was an intervention study among in-school adolescent boys and girls in 12 secondary schools in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to report on the revision rates and clinical outcomes following dynamic intraligamentary stabilization (DIS) at a minimum follow-up of 5 years and to investigate which preoperative or intraoperative characteristics could influence revision rates or clinical scores.

Methods: The authors retrospectively assessed all 609 knees that underwent ACL repair using DIS at a single centre. At a minimum follow-up of 5 years, patients were assessed using the Lysholm, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Tegner scores, as well as passive flexion and extension.

Background: Young people (aged 10 to 24 years) in sub-Saharan Africa bear a huge and disproportionate burden of poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes due to inequalities and discrimination in accessing sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS). This study assessed the experiences and perceptions of discrimination among young people seeking SRH services in Primary Health Centers (PHCs) using an intersectionality lens.

Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was undertaken in six local government areas (LGAs) in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria.

Background: Adolescents need both information about sexual behaviours and potential risks in order to make the right choices. This study compared adolescents' level of awareness and predictors of knowledge of condoms and dual protection where a multi-component sexual and reproductive health (SRH) intervention was implemented and in communities where the intervention was not implemented, so as to understand the effect of the intervention on awareness and knowledge and also identify predictors of knowledge of contraception methods.

Methods: The study was an intervention study that was undertaken in six local government areas (three rural and three urban LGAs) in Ebonyi state, southeast Nigeria.

An automated proteomic platform for producing and screening an array of functional proteins on biosensor surfaces was developed to address the challenges of measuring proteomic interaction kinetics in high throughput (HTP). This technology is termed Sensor-Integrated Proteome On Chip (SPOC) which involves cell-free protein expression in nano-liter volume wells (nanowells) directly from rapidly customizable arrays of plasmid DNA, facilitating simultaneous capture-purification of up to 2400 unique full-length folded proteins onto a 1.5 sq-cm surface of a single gold biosensor chip.

parasites have a complex life cycle, but the most clinically relevant stage of the disease is the invasion of erythrocytes and the proliferation of the parasite in the blood. The influence of human genetic traits on malaria has been known for a long time, however understanding the role of the proteins involved is hampered by the anuclear nature of erythrocytes that makes them inaccessible to genetic tools. Here we overcome this limitation using stem cells to generate erythroid cells with an differentiation protocol and assess parasite invasion with an adaptation of flow cytometry to detect parasite hemozoin.

Background: The proximal femur geometry determines the hip force distribution. The femoral neck axis length (FNAL), the hip axis length (HAL), the femoral head diameter, and the femoral neck-shaft angle (FNSA) could influence the risk and outcome of pertrochanteric fractures. Restoring these parameters to their prefracture values could predict early hip function.

In pregnancy, early signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection, including cystitis or pyelonephritis, may overlap with pregnancy symptoms, making early detection challenging. Compounding this challenge is when it presents itself in resource-poor settings for several factors, including poverty, poor access to healthcare care, inadequate diagnostic facilities, low availability of insurance, education, and cultural limitations. In this case report, we present a case of a 33-year-old G3P2 with pyelonephritis in pregnancy that was compounded by issues related to access to care in resource-limited settings.
