Introduction: Examination of the gut-liver axis came into the spotlight worldwide. Liver enzyme elevations are commonly seen in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is a diagnostic challenge in everyday clinical practice. Liver and biliary diseases are common extra-intestinal manifestations in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Background: Mycophenolic acid (MPA), a selective inhibitor of lymphocyte proliferation, has lately been used to improve renal function and prolong graft survival in renal transplanted patients. Still, there is no consensus considering the recommended dosing and the therapeutic range of MPA.

Methods: To estimate the safe therapeutic range of MPA, its plasma level and indicators of kidney function were measured in 216 patients (138 male, 78 female, age 46 ± 12 years) 67 ± 46 months after transplantation.

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a major, soluble, pattern-recognition molecule and an important component of the innate host defense. The role of MBL in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) is controversial. We determined the prevalence of MBL deficiency in a Hungarian IBD patients' cohort, and whether it is associated with the antimicrobial antibody formation or particular clinical manifestations.

The primary aim of this study was to measure psychological distress, pain severity, health related quality of life (QOL) and pain coping strategies in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis (UC). A second aim was to determine the influence of somatic and psychological variables on health related QOL. Eighty-eight IBS and 66 UC patients completed the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBSQOL), Pain Severity Scale of West Haven Yale Multidimensional Pain Inventory (WHYMPY), Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) and Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ).

Background: Pancreatic autoantibodies (PAB) and goblet cell autoantibodies (GAB) are specific for Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), but the sensitivity alone is low. Conventional antibodies and carbohydrates (glycans) are associated with disease phenotype and may be of diagnostic importance in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our aim was to determine the accuracy of PAB and GAB autoantibodies as well as to study relevant phenotype-serotype associations.

Objective: It has been suggested that deficient defensin expression is associated with the chronic inflammation of Crohn's disease. The regional localization of Crohn's disease, ileal or colonic disease can be linked to different defensin profiles. As constitutive beta-defensin 1 has a colonic expression, we considered it of interest to investigate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the beta-defensin 1 gene (DEFB1) in Crohn's disease.

Purpose: In previous studies the NFKBIA 3'UTR (untranslated region) AA genotype was associated with Crohn's disease (CD), while the NFKB1-94ins/delATTG mutation increased the risk for ulcerative colitis (UC). The aim of our study was to investigate these two polymorphisms and patients' response to medical therapy and/or disease phenotype in Hungarian inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients.

Methods: NFKBIA 3'UTR- and NFKB1-94ins/delATTG polymorphisms were investigated in 415 unrelated IBD patients (CD: 266 patients, mean age 35.

Background: Antibodies to Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) (ASCA) and porin protein-C of Escherichia coli (anti-OmpC) are associated with disease phenotype and may be of diagnostic importance in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Our aim was to determine whether a panel of new antibodies against bacterial proteins and carbohydrates could help differentiate among the various forms of IBD, and whether they were associated with particular clinical manifestations in a Hungarian cohort of IBD patients.

Objective: MDR1 (ABCB1), a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, is an attractive candidate gene for the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and perhaps for response to therapy. Since limited data are available on MDR1 and ABCG2 polymorphisms in East European IBD patients, the aim of this study was to investigate ABCG2 and MDR1 variants and responses to medical therapy and/or disease phenotype in Hungarian patients.

Material And Methods: A total of 414 unrelated IBD patients (Crohn's disease (CD): 265, age: 35.

Background: Antibodies directed against Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ASCA), perinuclear components of neutrophils (pANCA), and porin protein C of Escherichia coli (anti-OmpC) are reported to be associated with disease phenotype and may be of diagnostic importance in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Since limited data are available from Eastern Europe, we assessed the above antibodies in Hungarian IBD patients.

Methods: In all, 653 well-characterized, unrelated consecutive IBD patients (Crohn's disease [CD]: 558, m/f: 263/295, duration: 8.

The redox homeostasis of patients with inflammatory bowel disease is not balanced because of malnutrition and malabsorption. The seriousness of this illness often hinders the intake and use of bioactive agents. We have just a small amount of knowledge about how patients can get access to these important materials.

Background: Recent data suggest that haplotypic variants of the DLG5 gene on 10q23 are associated with susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Germany. In view of the geographical differences in frequency of genetic markers and the absence of data in Central European patients, our aim was to determine the DLG5 R30Q variant in Hungarian IBD patients.

Materials And Methods: We investigated 773 unrelated IBD patients (age 38.

Recent research has found that people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) show a relative deficit in verbal IQ, compared to their own performance IQ, and the IQ of a healthy comparison group. It has been suggested that the elevated prevalence of left-handedness shown in previous studies investigating people with IBD is due to compromised left-hemisphere development. This may be associated with a decrement in certain cognitive functions such as verbal IQ.

Background/aims: Recent molecular data suggest that genetic factors may underlie the disease heterogeneity observed in Crohn's disease (CD). It was also suggested that familial inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a homogenous subgroup, phenotypically different from sporadic disease. Our aim was to determine the clinical presentation in a large CD population.

Janus faced oxygen radicals are secondary messengers of intracellular signal transduction pathways but also cytotoxic agents of cells. Activation of signal transduction proteins on mild oxidant stress and metal elements are still not clearly understood. Oxygen free radicals may have several functions in the expression of cytokines associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
