Autoimmunity in sudden sensorineural hearing loss: possible role of anti-endothelial cell autoantibodies.

In order to verify whether anti-endothelial cell autoantibodies (AECAs) can be used as serological markers of inner ear vasculitis in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), 32 patients affected by idiopathic SSHL were investigated. All patients underwent a routine general physical examination and extensive audiovestibular, microbiological and immunological investigations. Fourteen normal subjects without a history of HL, autoimmune or metabolic disease served as controls.

The mechanism of docosahexaenoic acid-induced phospholipase D activation in human lymphocytes involves exclusion of the enzyme from lipid rafts.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid that inhibits T lymphocyte activation, has been shown to stimulate phospholipase D (PLD) activity in stimulated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the DHA-induced PLD activation, we first characterized the PLD expression pattern of PBMC. We show that these cells express PLD1 and PLD2 at the protein and mRNA level and are devoid of oleate-dependent PLD activity.

HMGA1 and HMGA2 protein expression in mouse spermatogenesis.

The high-mobility group A (HMGA) nonhistone chromosomal proteins HMGA1 and HMGA2 play a role in determining chromatin structure and in regulating the transcription of several genes. High levels of these proteins are characteristic of rapidly dividing cells in embryonic tissue and in tumors. The aim of this study was to determine the role of HMGA1 and HMGA2 throughout mouse spermatogenesis.

[Role of gastroesophageal reflux in precancerous conditions and in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: our experience].

The major risk factors for the onset of precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx are, above all, tobacco smoke, alcohol abuse and exposure to viral and toxic agents. In recent years, however, gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) has also aroused significant interest not only as carcinogen but also as co-carcinogen in association with smoking and alcohol consumption. The purpose of the present work is to provide an objective evaluation of the presence of distal and proximal esophageal reflux using multi-electrode pH monitoring in patients with precancerous lesions of the larynx and laryngeal and pharyngolaryngeal neoplasms.

The MAPK pathway triggers activation of Nek2 during chromosome condensation in mouse spermatocytes.

Chromosome condensation during the G2/M progression of mouse pachytene spermatocytes induced by the phosphatase inhibitor okadaic acid (OA) requires the activation of the MAPK Erk1. In many cell systems, p90Rsks are the main effectors of Erk1/2 function. We have identified p90Rsk2 as the isoform that is specifically expressed in mouse spermatocytes and have shown that it is activated during the OA-triggered meiotic G2/M progression.

[Gastro-esophageal reflux and laryngeal phlogistic disorders: clinical evaluation and multi-electrode pH monitoring].

Gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) is a complex pathology characterized by many clinical symptoms: gastroenterological (typical symptoms) and odontostomatological, pneumological and, more frequently, otorhinolaryngological (atypical symptoms). For this last manifestations no cause-effect relationship has yet been proven. Using a validated questionnaire about the typical reflux symptoms and the use of substances of abuse (tobacco and alcohol) and with the application of instrumental means such as electronic videolaryngoscopy and multi-electrode 24 hours esophageal pH monitoring, the Authors have studied 34 selected patients (16 female, 18 male) suffering from chronic clinical laryngeal symptoms and presenting a peculiar pharyngeal-laryngeal objectivity.

Management of severe blunt pancreatic trauma in children. Personal experience.

Blunt abdominal trauma is the most common cause of pancreatic injuries in children. Non-operative management of traumatic injuries in the absence of complete duct transection is safe in children and does not appear to be associated with adverse sequelae. The purpose of this report is to describe the diagnostic techniques, clinical management and survival of 9 children with traumatic injuries of the pancreas treated in our institution over a period of 7 year.

The Pediatric Bowel Management Clinic in children with severe chronic constipation. Personal experience.

The multifactorial nature of functional constipation in children suggests that a multidisciplinary management approach may be effective and leads to both patients and parents' satisfaction and significant short term improvement. The authors describe their experience with the study and treatment of children with severe chronic constipation in a newly-created Pediatric Bowel Management Clinic (BMC). Further studies will examine the long-term impact of the clinic.

[Role of endothelial cell autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of sudden hear loss].

Sudden hearing loss can be found in systemic autoimmune diseases or it can be a symptom of an autoimmune disease of the inner ear. The present work has studied a group of patients with idiopathic sudden hearing loss to determine what role anti-endothelial cell antibodies (AECA) play as markers of immuno-mediated vasculitis of the inner ear. The study involved 32 patients with sudden deafness and 14 controls.

[Surgery of congenital malformations in developing countries: experience in 13 humanitarian missions during 9 years].

The authors report their surgical experience concerning seriously impaired children due to congenital malformations or other non-congenital anomalies such as burns and traumas. All the patients were operated in one of 13 humanitarian missions undertaken in four developing countries. Throughout the "Third World" the demand for reconstructive surgery is extremely high due to the high birth rate and consequently large number of patients, as well as the shortage of both medical staff and supplies.

Functional feature of a novel model of blood brain barrier: studies on permeation of test compounds.

Drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) is subject to the permeability limitations imposed by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Several systems in vitro have been described to reproduce the physical and biochemical behavior of intact BBB, most of which lack the feature of the in vivo barrier. We developed a fully formed monolayer of RBE4.

Signaling through extracellular signal-regulated kinase is required for spermatogonial proliferative response to stem cell factor.

In vitro addition of stem cell factor (SCF) to c-kit-expressing A(1)-A(4) spermatogonia from prepuberal mice stimulates their progression into the mitotic cell cycle and significantly reduces apoptosis in these cells. SCF addition results in a transient activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (Erk)1/2 as well as of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-dependent Akt kinase. These events are followed by a rapid re-distribution of cyclin D3, which becomes predominantly nuclear, whereas its total cellular amount does not change.

Reoperative orchiopexy: surgical aspects and functional outcome.

Over a 14-year period, a total of 40 patients underwent surgical revision after an unsuccessful orchiopexy attempt. Overall, 34 reorchiopexies (1 bilateral) and 7 orchiectomies were performed. All reorchiopexies were carried out using extensive mobilization of the testis and spermatic cord.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a rare cause of nonsurgical pneumoperitoneum in an infant.

The authors describe a 3-year-old boy with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) and associated duodenal stenosis who came to them with abdominal pain, significant abdominal distension, large gastric residue, and pneumoperitoneum. PCI is a rare condition in children characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts within the wall of some part of gastrointestinal tract that may break and cause pneumoperitoneum without an intestinal perforation. Even if in most cases the standard treatment is surgical, to keep in mind this rare condition could be useful to adopt a most rational treatment approach and avoid unnecessary operation in case of "benign" pneumoperitoneum.

Neurons and ECM regulate occludin localization in brain endothelial cells.

We report that extracellular matrix and neurons modulate the expression of occludin, one of the main components of tight junctions, by rat brain endothelial cells (RBE4.B). Of the three extracellular matrix proteins which we tested (collagen I, collagen IV, and laminin), collagen IV stimulated at the best the expression of occludin mRNA.

[Fecal incontinence in pediatric age: diagnostic-therapeutic protocol and possible surgical procedures].

Fecal incontinence or soiling always endangers the personality development of a children. For very severe cases, the patient will be limited on his educational and professional training as well as on his sexal life. The outlook of severe cases, the chances of completing school, the choice of professional training and of sexual life in the future will be limited.

[Neonatal chylous ascites: a case report and review of the literature].

The case of a newborn with asymptomatic chylous ascites operated on because of voluminous inguino-scrotal hernia is reported and a review of the recent literature about aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of neonatal chylous ascites is made.

Maize polyamine oxidase: primary structure from protein and cDNA sequencing.

The first complete amino acid sequence of a flavin-containing polyamine oxidase was solved by a combined approach of nucleotide and peptide sequence analysis. A cDNA of 1737 bp, isolated from maize seedlings by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and rapid amplification of cDNA ends strategies, was cloned and its sequence determined. This cDNA contains information for a polypeptide chain of 500 amino acids.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the lung arising in cystic adenomatoid malformation: case report and review of the literature.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the lung is a very rare lesion, but the association with cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) is unlikely to be a coincidence. Although the etiologic factors predisposing infants and children to pulmonary neoplasms are unknown, pulmonary developmental abnormalities may play a pathogenetic role. A case of embryonal pulmonary RMS is described, which was discovered within a congenital CCAM in a 22-month-old child.

Juxta-adrenal malignant schwannoma.

A case of malignant schwannoma occurring in an 11-year-old boy is described. To our knowledge, this is the third case of malignant juxta-adrenal schwannoma reported in the literature. It was misdiagnosed at the onset of the disease as a post-traumatic renal hematoma.

[Cryptorchidism with didymo-epididymal dissociation and Robinow's syndrome: 2 case reports].

Two brothers of normal not consanguineous parents, with bilateral intrabdominal cryptorchidism, were admitted to our Institution. Both children had short stature, limb and hand malformations and craniofacial patterns of Robinow syndrome. During the orchidopexy, bilateral epididymal and vasal abnormalities were found in both of them.

[Cystic-papillary neoplasm of the pancreas: a case report in childhood].

A solid and cystic tumor of the pancreas in a 11-year-old girl is reported. The child presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. A voluminous tumor, arising from the pancreas tail, was removed with distal pancreatectomy.
