Childhood obesity represents a serious public health burden. Schaaf-Yang syndrome (SYS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder whose clinical spectrum includes neurodevelopment delay, dysmorphic features, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as feeding difficulties, gastroesophageal reflux, and chronic constipation. Given the small number of patients diagnosed with this syndrome, our aim is to describe novel clinical features that have not yet been reported. Abiotic and biotic factors may shape the mycobiome communities in plants directly but also indirectly by modifying the quality of host plants as a substrate. We hypothesized that nitrogen fertilization (N) would determine the quality of aspen () leaves as a substrate for the endophytic fungi, and that by subjecting the plants to N, we could manipulate the concentrations of positive (nutritious) and negative (antifungal) chemicals in leaves, thus changing the internal "chemical landscape" for the fungi. We expected that this would lead to changes in the fungal community composition, in line with the predictions of heterogeneity-diversity relationship and resource availability hypotheses.

Clinical presentation includes ichthyosis follicularis, alopecia, photophobia and developmental delay. Hereditary mucoepithelial dysplasia (HMD) is a dominantly inherited disease characterized by keratitis, non-scarring alopecia, skin lesions including follicular keratosis, perineal erythema, and mucosal involvement.

Levels of Zn, Cu and Fe were measured in blood serum samples of 320 children: 160 boys and 160 girls randomly selected, ages between 7 and 14 years, all considered healthy and residing in the City of Merida, Venezuela. Twenty-four patients with mild to moderate hypertension were randomly assigned to 42 days of treatment with 20 mg of nitrendipine once daily or 20 mg of nicardipine thrice daily. In the nitrendipine-treated and nicardipine-treated patients, respectively, mean resting blood pressure decreased from 163 +/- 12 and 161 +/- 11 mmHg at baseline to 152 +/- 12 and 146 +/- 9 mmHg at six weeks (P less than 0.001).

We have determined the nucleotide sequence of a maxi-circle segment from the insect trypanosome Crithidia fasciculata mitochondrial DNA, on which the genes for the major maxicircle transcripts of 9S and 12S are localized. The 5'-terminal sequences of these RNAs were determined by wandering spot analysis. The map coordinates of the 9S and 12S RNAs from Trypanosoma brucei were adjusted with respect to a previous report with the aid of primer extension analysis with reverse transcriptase.

Mitochondrial protein synthesis was studied during release from glucose repression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells bearing different mitochondrial genomes. The increase in the rate of the synthesis of mitochondrial translation products was analyzed during respiratory induction. Different kinetic patterns were found for strains having a different structure of mitochondrial mosaic genes, even when the nuclear background was the same.
