Endocrine diagnostics currently depend on the ability to measure low and high concentrations of diagnostic hormones using immunoassays. This often is challenging in species other than humans, dogs, cats, and horses due to lack of validated assays and reference intervals. There are strategies to approach endocrine testing in zoo, wildlife, and zoologic companion animals but caution is needed in interpreting results.

A 13-year-old male domestic short-hair cat presented for evaluation of labored breathing, hyporexia, and lethargy. Pertinent initial diagnostics yielded leukocytosis, characterized by neutrophilia and monocytosis. Numerous small, round, magenta granules were observed within all neutrophils in Wright-Giemsa-stained blood films on the day of presentation and the day thereafter.

Because the rotation rate is not constant, UTC contains discontinuities (leap seconds), which complicates its use in computer networks. Viruses from a new species of piscichuvirus were strongly associated with severe lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis in several free-ranging aquatic turtles from 3 coastal US states during 2009-2021. Sequencing identified 2 variants (freshwater turtle neural virus 1 [FTuNV1] and sea turtle neural virus 1 [STuNV1]) of the new piscichuvirus species in 3 turtles of 3 species. In situ hybridization localized viral mRNA to the inflamed region of the central nervous system in all 3 sequenced isolates and in 2 of 3 additional nonsequenced isolates.

The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A1 (eIF5A1) and 5A2 (eIF5A2) are important proteins in a variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes and their function has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, cancer, and viral infections. Here, we report two new genome-edited mouse models, generated using a CRISPR-Cas9 approach, in which the amino acid residue lysine 50 is replaced with arginine 50 (K50R) in eIF5A1 or in the closely related eIF5A2 protein. This mutation prevents the spermidine-dependent post-translational formation of hypusine, a unique lysine derivative that is necessary for activation of eIF5A1 and eIF5A2.

Loss of heterozygosity and promoter hypermethylation of APC is frequently observed in human endometrial cancer, which is the most common gynecological cancer in the USA, but its carcinogenic driver status in the endometrial epithelium has not been confirmed. We have identified a novel population of progenitor endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) in mice that express lysozyme M (LysM) and give rise to approximately 15% of all EECs in adult mice. LysM is a glycoside hydrolase that is encoded by Lyz2 and functions to protect cells from bacteria as part of the innate immune system.

The provision of a simplified GIS workflow to analyse the Open Access NSW River Styles database provides non-technical GIS users in river management with the ability to quickly and efficiently obtain information to assist them in catchment-scale rehabilitation prioritisation. Publicly available proprietary GIS software, standard GIS tools, and a packaged digital elevation model are used to demonstrate the ease of analysis for those with some GIS skills, to establish where corridors of geomorphic river recovery occur or could be built at-scale. Rather than a 'single use' report, this novel application of GIS methods is designed to be used by those responsible for river management, replicated across landscapes and adjusted according to preferences.

Raccoons () are abundant in urban/wildland interfaces and are key sources of canine distemper virus (CDV) outbreaks in domestic, zoo, and free-ranging wildlife species. CDV is pantropic, which provides multiple potential routes of transmission (urine, respiratory secretions, feces), but the specific role of skin as a target of infection, as a diagnostic sample, or as a potential source of environmental persistence and transmission is unknown. We have characterized the distribution of CDV and its known receptor, nectin-4, in skin samples of 36 raccoons.

Engineered phage with properties optimised for the treatment of bacterial infections hold great promise, but require careful characterisation by a number of approaches. Phage-bacteria infection time courses, where populations of bacteriophage and bacteria are mixed and followed over many infection cycles, can be used to deduce properties of phage infection at the individual cell level. Here, we apply this approach to analysis of infection of by the temperate bacteriophage 186 and explore which properties of the infection process can be reliably inferred.

Recent reports have highlighted a lower-than-expected prevalence of neoplasia in elephants and suggested mechanisms for cancer resistance. But despite infrequent reports in the literature, uterine neoplasia is common in managed Asian elephants (). This study is an archival review of reproductive tract neoplasia in 80 adult female Asian elephant mortalities in managed care facilities in the United States from 1988 to 2019.

Steroid hormones may serve as potential biomarkers of treatment response for major depressive disorder (MDD). Here, we assessed salivary levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S), as well as α-amylase activity, across 30 sessions of bilateral repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in MDD patients. While rTMS significantly improved symptoms as measured by three different symptom scales, salivary biomarker levels and their ratios showed no significant changes across sessions.

In zoos, rock hyrax () are commonly maintained in groups and population control is necessary. Here we report on hydrometra prevalence in a group of rock hyraxes. Prevalence of hydrometra in this small group (4/8) far exceeds reproductive pathology prevalence previously reported for this species under managed care.

High neonatal mortality among red pandas () challenges the long-term sustainability of the Species Survival Plan population. Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a rare condition in domestic animals, typically due to an inherited genetic defect. Nongoitrous CH was presumptively diagnosed in 75% ( = 6/8) of red panda neonates from four successive litters, with a common sire and two closely related dams.

We describe the isolation of atypical Brucella inopinata-like species and unique clinicopathologic findings in 2 adult marine toads (Rhinella marina), including oophoritis in 1 toad. These findings represent a novel emerging disease in toads and a possible zoonotic pathogen.
