Effect of sterilants and plant growth regulators in regenerating commonly used cassava cultivars at the Kenyan coast.

Cassava is an important root crop whose seed system is undeveloped. Micropropagation of explants has the potential of addressing the challenge of the unavailability of healthy cassava planting materials. Therefore, the study determined the effect of sterilization and plant growth regulators on cassava explants to produce certified disease-free plants of commonly used cultivars at the coast of Kenya.

Comparative profiling of lactic acid bacteria isolates in optimized and spontaneous fermentation of cowpea leaves.

In as much as spontaneous fermentation of cowpea leaves enhances product diversification, the process is rather slow with poor product quality. Limited work has been undertaken to provide input toward standardization of the process and enhancing of product quality. The current study sought to evaluate the in-process fermentative bacteria profile changes due to the effect of optimization of fermentation process of cowpea leaves.

A review of the contribution of cowpea leaves to food and nutrition security in East Africa.

Cowpea leaf is among the African indigenous vegetables that have been recommended for possible alleviation of food and nutrition insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The vegetable is rich in micronutrients including iron and vitamin A whose deficiencies are prevalent in SSA. Considering the limitation of seasonal availability, preservation techniques have been adopted to enhance availability with little success.
