Suitability of Placental Blood Samples of Newborns for Pre-Transfusion Testing.

To show concordance between heel stick and placental blood sample pairs for newborns' pre-transfusion testing and to validate placental blood's tube and gel methodology. Placental samples were collected for pre-transfusion testing at birth from 78 singleton and twin newborns admitted to our Mother-Baby Unit to compare with the results of heel stick samples taken from same newborns. Gestational age ≥35 weeks, weight ≥2,000 g.

Pathological findings in organs and tissues of patients with COVID-19: A systematic review.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 that has caused more than 2.2 million deaths worldwide. We summarize the reported pathologic findings on biopsy and autopsy in patients with severe/fatal COVID-19 and documented the presence and/or effect of SARS-CoV-2 in all organs.

Temporality of heparin-induced antibodies: a retrospective study in outpatients undergoing hemodialysis on unfractionated heparin.

Background: Heparin-induced antibodies (HIA) are responsible for causing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. Research has shown that the temporality of heparin-induced antibodies does not follow the classic immunologic response. The immunobiology of HIA generation remains unclear with varying in vitro and in vivo data.

Multi-Center Evaluation of the Automated Immunohematology Instrument, the ORTHO VISION Analyzer.

Background: ORTHO VISION Analyzer (Vision), is an immunohematology instrument using ID-MT gel card technology with digital image processing. It has a continuous, random sample access with STAT priority processing. The efficiency and ease of operation of Vision was evaluated at 5 medical centers.

Effect of therapeutic plasma exchange on coagulation parameters in patients on warfarin.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) without plasma replacement results in coagulation factor removal. Warfarin decreases the activity of vitamin K dependent coagulation factors. The combined effect of TPE and warfarin on the coagulation system has not been studied.

Postoperative coagulopathy in a pediatric patient after exposure to bovine topical thrombin.

Severe postoperative coagulopathy developed in a child with congenital heart disease due to a factor V inhibitor from repetitive exposure to bovine topical thrombin. This case report alerts pediatric providers to consider these inhibitors when postoperative coagulopathy occurs. Potential treatment options are reviewed.

Upper-extremity deep venous thrombosis complicating whole-blood donation.

Background: Up to 36 percent of blood donors may experience a donation-related complication. Fatigue, bruises, hematomas, and vasovagal reactions comprise the great majority of donor reactions and injuries. Serious complications are rare.

Lupus anticoagulant associated with transient severe factor X deficiency: a report of two patients presenting with major bleeding complications.

Acquired factor X (FX) deficiency is rare, but has been reported in diverse disease states, including systemic amyloidosis and respiratory infections. FX deficiency associated with lupus anticoagulant (LA) and a bleeding diathesis has not been previously reported. We report two patients both of whom presented with a severe bleeding diathesis after a preceding respiratory infection due to isolated FX deficiency associated with a LA.
