Influence of age and gender on gait kinematics of pelvis and hip in healthy adults aged 19-60 years.

Purpose: Pelvic and hip motion are pivotal in maintaining postural control and energy efficient gait. An insight into influence of age and gender on the coupled motion of hip and pelvis in gait-cycle will guide clinical rehabilitation strategies and pertinent technology-design for specific age-groups. Therefore, present study evaluated pelvic and hip-joint gait kinematics in healthy females and males across adult-hood.

Smoking carcinogen induced inflammation promotes lung carcinogenesis via IRAK4 activation.

Purpose: Even though smoking is associated with lung cancer, the exact molecular pathways that link carcinogens with inflammation and oncogenic transformation are not well elucidated. Two major carcinogens in cigarette smoke, Nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and benzo(α)pyrene (BaP) have not been tested in models that mimic inhaled exposure for prolonged periods of time.

Experimental Design: ICR mice were treated with intratracheal delivery of NNK and BaP (NB) for 18 months.

Taxonomy-based prompt engineering to generate synthetic drug-related patient portal messages.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to: (1) create a corpus of synthetic drug-related patient portal messages to address the current lack of publicly available datasets for model development, (2) assess differences in language used and linguistics among the synthetic patient portal messages, and (3) assess the accuracy of patient-reported drug side effects for different racial groups.

Methods: We leveraged a taxonomy for patient- and clinician-generated content to guide prompt engineering for synthetic drug-related patient portal messages. We generated two groups of messages: the first group (200 messages) used a subset of the taxonomy relevant to a broad range of drug-related messages and the second group (250 messages) used a subset of the taxonomy relevant to a narrow range of messages focused on side effects.

Comparing short-term mortality between people with and without HIV admitted to the intensive care unit: A single-centre matched cohort study (2000-2019).

Objectives: The survival rate of people with HIV admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) is approaching that of people without HIV. We conducted a matched-cohort study of people with and without HIV admitted to ICU at a large hospital to compare short-term mortality, during 2000-2019.

Methods: People with HIV were matched to people without HIV (1:2) on age, sex, admission year and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE)-II score.

Plasma exchange does not improve overall survival in patients with acute liver failure in a real-world cohort.

Background & Aims: Therapeutic plasma exchange (PEX) has emerged as a potential treatment option for patients with acute liver failure (ALF). The effect of PEX on survival outcomes outside of clinical trials is not yet well established. In this study we aimed to evaluate the real-world use and outcomes of PEX for the treatment of ALF.

Tooth Loss in Periodontitis Patients-A Risk Factor for Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Periodontal disease and tooth loss have been long suggested as risk factors of mild cognitive impairment. The underlying mechanisms could be systemic chronic inflammatory mediators, direct pathologic challenge to the nervous system, malnutrition and/or loss of neurosensory stimulation input causing brain atrophy. This review aimed to examine the existing literature studies linking the effect of periodontal disease and tooth loss on the development of mild cognitive impairment.

Glutaminase inhibition in combination with azacytidine in myelodysplastic syndromes: a phase 1b/2 clinical trial and correlative analyses.

Malignancies are reliant on glutamine as an energy source and a facilitator of aberrant DNA methylation. We demonstrate preclinical synergy of telaglenastat (CB-839), a selective glutaminase inhibitor, combined with azacytidine (AZA), followed by a single-arm, open-label, phase 1b/2 study in persons with advanced myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The dual primary endpoints evaluated clinical activity, safety and tolerability; secondary endpoints evaluated pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, overall survival, event-free survival and duration of response.

Estimating the magnitude of different barriers to dental care for special needs patients: A systematic review.

Quite often, it is seen that the number of special care individual in the dental OPD/clinics is quite low, as compared to their population. This can be due to specific barriers that restrict them in availing dental treatment. Our aim was to identify different barriers to dental care of persons with special needs through a systematic review and to quantify them.

Assessment of Stress and Anxiety in Parents of Neonates Admitted in a Tertiary Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Background A newborn's admission into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is one unexpected event capable of causing much stress and anxiety among parents. The current study aims to evaluate and compare parental stress and anxiety levels between mothers and fathers. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted in the NICU of a tertiary care center, in Uttarakhand where a total of 306 mothers and fathers were enrolled.

Non-selective beta-blocker is associated with reduced mortality in critically ill patients with cirrhosis: A real-world study.

Background: Apart from direct portal pressure reduction, non-selective beta-blockers (NSBB) modulate inflammatory response, which could be beneficial in patients with acute decompensation (AD). We therefore aimed to evaluate the effect of NSBB on 28-day mortality and markers of systemic inflammation in a propensity score-matched (PSM) cohort of AD patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission.

Methods: Patients were recruited from registry of AD patients requiring ICU admission.

Comparative Evaluation of Normal Saline Gel and Ozone Therapy on Soft and Hard Tissue Health in Dental Implant Surgery.

Aims: To comparatively evaluate the effect of normal saline gel and ozonated saline-ozonated gel (ozone therapy) on pain, inflammation, soft tissue, and crestal bone loss in dental implant surgery.

Methods And Material: Forty adult patients scheduled to undergo implant were randomized into two groups: Twenty patients (n = 20) received ozone therapy and controls (n = 20) received normal saline and gel during implant placement. Inflammation and pain were noted at days 1 and 7 and 3 month intervals by estimating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and assessing visual analogue scale (VAS) scores.

An innovative technological infrastructure for managing SARS-CoV-2 data across different cohorts in compliance with General Data Protection Regulation.

Background: The ORCHESTRA project, funded by the European Commission, aims to create a pan-European cohort built on existing and new large-scale population cohorts to help rapidly advance the knowledge related to the prevention of the SARS-CoV-2 infection and the management of COVID-19 and its long-term sequelae. The integration and analysis of the very heterogeneous health data pose the challenge of building an innovative technological infrastructure as the foundation of a dedicated framework for data management that should address the regulatory requirements such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Methods: The three participating Supercomputing European Centres (CINECA - Italy, CINES - France and HLRS - Germany) designed and deployed a dedicated infrastructure to fulfil the functional requirements for data management to ensure sensitive biomedical data confidentiality/privacy, integrity, and security.

Influence of Physical Activity Including Squat Exposure on Trunk Muscle Strength and Labour Outcome in Pregnant Women.

Daily living physical activities of rural pregnant women, across most continents in the world, involve adoption of high-flexion postures like deep-squat. Deep-squat elicits substantial activation of major trunk and lower extremity muscles. Adequate strength of trunk muscles is known to facilitate forward-downward propulsion of baby during labour.

While therapies targeting CD19 by antibodies, chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T), and T cell engagers have improved the response rates in B cell malignancies, the emergence of resistant cell populations with low CD19 expression can lead to relapsed disease. We developed an in vitro model of adaptive resistance facilitated by chronic exposure of leukemia cells to a CD19 immunotoxin. Single-cell RNA-Seq (scRNA-Seq) showed an increase in transcriptionally distinct CD19lo populations among resistant cells.

The role of graft T-cell size in patients receiving alemtuzumab serotherapy for non-malignant disorders: results of an institutional protocol.

Although graft T cells assist in engraftment, mediate antiviral immune-reconstitution, and cause graft-versus-host disease, graft size is not determined by T-cell content of the graft. The conventional method of graft size determination based on CD34+ cells with alemtuzumab serotherapy is associated with delayed immune reconstitution, contributing to an increased risk of viral infections and graft failure. Alemtuzumab, a long half-life anti-CD52 monoclonal antibody is a robust T-cell depleting serotherapy, and relatively spares memory-effector T cells compared to naïve T cells.

The art of managing various ocular defects in different clinical scenarios: A case series.

The absence of eye and irradiation post-enucleation may result in problems like dryness of the eye sockets, itching and crusting. This may lead to poor prosthesis adaptation and a lack of patient acceptance of the prosthesis. To combat the most common problem of dryness, patients are advised artificial tears to use as teardrops or ocular prostheses along with a tear reservoir.

Novel Therapeutic Approaches in Treatment of Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), a clinical syndrome that can develop at any stage in the progression of cirrhotic liver disease, is characterized by an acute decompensation in liver function with associated multiorgan failure and high short-term mortality. Current evidence points to ACLF being reversible, particularly in those at the lower end of the severity spectrum. However, there are no specific treatments for ACLF, and overall outcomes remain poor.

Patient acceptability of a wheel chair recliner developed to perform dental procedures at wheelchair itself: A cross-sectional study.

Aim: Transfer from a wheelchair and discomfort in dental chair are two important barriers for access to dental care among wheelchair-bound patients. The authors have devised an automated wheelchair recliner that helps to mimic the dental chair functioning at wheelchair itself. The aim of this study was to analyze the performance and acceptability of wheelchair recliner among wheelchair-bound patients.
