Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the most common type of ovarian germ cell tumor occurring in females of reproductive age. It is typically benign, but rare malignant transformations have been reported in 1-2% of the cases. Among a wide variety of malignancies arising in MCTs, high grade lymphomas are the least common.

Brief Report: Prevalence of Peripheral Artery Disease Is Higher in Persons Living With HIV Compared With Uninfected Controls.

Objective: Ankle-brachial index is an excellent tool for diagnosing peripheral artery disease (PAD). We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for PAD in people living with HIV (PLWH) compared with uninfected controls. We hypothesized that prevalence of PAD would be higher among PLWH than among controls independent of traditional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.

Bifurcation of axons from dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and cranial sensory ganglion (CSG) neurons is mediated by a cGMP-dependent signaling pathway composed of the ligand C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), the receptor guanylyl cyclase Npr2 and the cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (cGKI). Here, we demonstrate that mesencephalic trigeminal neurons (MTN) which are the only somatosensory neurons whose cell bodies are located within the CNS co-express Npr2 and cGKI. Afferents of MTNs form Y-shaped branches in rhombomere 2 where the ligand CNP is expressed.

Combined value of exhaled nitric oxide and blood eosinophils in chronic airway disease: the Copenhagen General Population Study.

We investigated whether the combination of increased exhaled nitric oxide fraction () level and blood eosinophil count had an additive value in chronic airway disease in the general population.We included 4677 individuals aged 20-100 years from the Copenhagen General Population Study. Based on pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry, self-reported asthma and smoking history, participants were subdivided into healthy never-smokers (n=1649), healthy ever-smokers (n=1581), asthma (n=449), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=404), asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) (n=138) and nonspecific airflow limitation (n=456).

Computed tomography quantification of emphysema in people living with HIV and uninfected controls.

People living with HIV (PLWH) may be more susceptible to the development of emphysema than uninfected individuals. We assessed prevalence and risk factors for emphysema in PLWH and uninfected controls. Spirometry and chest computed tomography scans were obtained in PLWH from the Copenhagen Comorbidity in HIV Infection (COCOMO) study and in uninfected controls from the Copenhagen General Population Study (CGPS) who were >40 years.

Topological phases and the bulk-edge correspondence in 2D photonic microring resonator lattices.

We show that 2D photonic lattices consisting of coupled microring resonators can emulate quantum systems driven by periodic Hamiltonians and can thus be used to realize photonic Floquet topological insulators. By transforming a 2D microring lattice into an equivalent array of coupled waveguides with periodic boundary conditions, we explicitly derive the Floquet-Bloch Hamiltonian of the system and determine the winding numbers characterizing the band topology and bulk-edge correspondence of the lattice. By varying the coupling strengths between adjacent resonators, we show that a 2D microring lattice can support both anomalous Floquet insulator edge modes and Chern insulator edge modes over a wide range of coupling parameters.

Rheological behavior of pH responsive composite hydrogels of chitosan and alginate: Characterization and its use in encapsulation of citral.

The pure and composite hydrogels of chitosan with sodium alginate were synthesized at various pH values and characterized by rheology and IR-spectroscopy. Chitosan shows gelation at neutral and basic pH while sodium alginate remains in solution form at all pH values. By careful adjustment of mixing weight fraction ratio and pH, an array of hydrogels with modulated structural dynamics and viscoelasticity, mechanical strength and encapsulation capacity were obtained.

Microwave-assisted synthesis and evaluation of type 1 collagen-apatite composites for dental tissue regeneration.

The aim was to develop an economical and biocompatible collagen-based bioactive composite for tooth regeneration. Acid-soluble collagen was extracted and purified from fish scales. The design was innovated to molecularly tailor the surface charge sites of the nano-apatite providing chemical bonds with the collagen matrix via microwave irradiation technique.

Association of vitamin D with risk of type 2 diabetes: A Mendelian randomisation study in European and Chinese adults.

Background: Observational studies have reported that higher plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations are associated with lower risks of diabetes, but it is unclear if these associations are causal. The aim of this study was to test the relevance of 25(OH)D for type 2 diabetes using genetically instrumented differences in plasma 25(OH)D concentrations.

Role and importance of vitamin D deficiency in long-term prognosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) still remains undetermined. We tested the hypothesis that among individuals with COPD, those with low concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D have a poorer prognosis compared to those with normal concentrations. Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP), often considered the rarest form of ectopic pregnancy, is a result of implantation of the gestational sac into the fibrous tissue scar of a previous cesarean section. With an increase in the rate of cesarean sections, along with better awareness and improvement in sonographic diagnosis, the number and detection of scar pregnancies are on the rise. Because of its early invasion of the myometrium, usually in the first trimester, CSP is considered to be potentially lethal, leading to high risks of uterine rupture.

Accuracy of Specimen Radiography in Assessing Complete Local Excision with Breast-Conservation Surgery.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of “X- ray examination of surgically resected specimen‘‘ in assessing complete local excision (CLE). Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cross sectional study, data were collected for all female breast cancer cases who underwent breast-conserving surgery after needle localization of mammographically visible disease. Males, patients with mammographically invisible disease and cases with benign or inconclusive histopathology, those undergoing modified radical mastectomy and individuals with dense breast parenchyma were excluded.

XPC gene mutations in families with xeroderma pigmentosum from Pakistan; prevalent founder effect.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive skin disorder characterized by hyperpigmentation, premature skin aging, ocular and cutaneous photosensitivity, and increased risk of skin carcinoma. We investigated seven consanguineous XP families with nine patients from Pakistan. All the Patients exhibited typical clinical symptoms of XP since first year of life.
