Serum total triiodothyronine (T3) as a predictor of mortality and morbidity in critically ill patients and its correlation of predictability with acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score: A prospective observational study.

Background: The aim is to assess the prognostic value of total T3, total T4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone among critically ill patients admitted to the medical intensive care unit (ICU) in association with mortality and its correlation with the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) score.

Methods: : Our prospective observational study consists of 257 patients without known thyroid diseases admitted to the medical ICU. The baseline characteristics of the patients were recorded, including the APACHE II score and thyroid hormone levels at ICU admission.

Monophasic spindle cell myxoid synovial sarcoma of the hand: promising results with marginal resection.

Synovial sarcomas are deep-seated, genetically distinct, malignant neoplasms seen in young adults, with a male preponderance. They have unusual clinical and pathological presentation and mimic many other sarcomas and carcinomas, making the diagnosis quite challenging. Although four variants are identified, occurrence in the hand is extremely rare and leads to significant morbidity.

Rapidly progressive dementia with seizures: a post-dengue complication.

Dengue infection can cause various effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems. Direct neurotropism and immunological mechanisms are responsible for most such neurological manifestations. We present the case of a 64-year-old woman with rapidly progressive dementia with seizures following dengue infection.

Plasmodium vivax infection causes acute respiratory distress syndrome: a case report.

Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) is associated with numerous complications and high mortality, whereas Plasmodium vivax (Pv) infection is generally considered to be benign. However, severe complications, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in Pv infection, are emerging. This case report highlights the complication of ARDS during the course of Pv infection in a 60-year-old woman.

An unusual case of invasive aspergillosis in an immunocompetent individual.

Invasive aspergillosis is a highly lethal opportunistic infection that poses a significant threat to immunocompromised patients. With studies suggesting that the incidence of this disease is increasing, and mortality rates remain high, early diagnosis and treatment are very important to improve patient survival. We present the case of a 33-year-old immunocompetent woman who presented with a history of cough and severe breathlessness, and was diagnosed to have invasive aspergillosis.
