Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Cancer stands as one of the leading causes of death worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and it has led to approximately 10 million fatalities in 2020. Medicinal plants are still widely used and accepted form of treatment for most diseases including cancer in Ghana. This review presented Cryptolepis nigrescens (Wennberg) L.

Background: This study examined the associations of socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, surgery type, and treatment delays with mortality among colon cancer patients. In addition, the study also quantifies the extent to which clinical and SES factors' variations explain the racial/ethnic differences in overall survival.

Patients And Methods: We studied 111,789 adult patients ≥45 years old who were diagnosed with colon cancer between 2010 and 2017, identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

The regulation of the p53 tumor suppressor pathway is critically dependent on the activity of Murine Double Minute 2 (MDM2) and Murine Double Minute X (MDMX) proteins. In certain types of cancer cells, excessive amount of MDMX can poly-ubiquitinate p53, which can result in its degradation, leading to a subsequent reduction in the levels of this protein. Therefore, the design of small-molecule inhibitors targeting the MDMX-p53 interaction has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Happiness of older adults in rarely studied in the global south like Nigeria compared with the global north. This study assessed the relationship between family dynamics, spirituality, quality of life and happiness among older adults in Nigeria. Cross-sectional study of 378 older adults (≥60 years) were selected.

Objective: Although Socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, surgical type, and treatment delays are associated with breast cancer mortality outcomes, studies on these associations have been contrasting. This study examined the racial/ethnic and SES differences in surgical treatment types and treatment delays. Also, we quantified the extent to which these differences explained the racial/ethnic disparities in breast cancer mortality.

The clinical features of COVID-19 and malaria are interrelated. Due to the similarity of symptoms between the two disease states, patients can be incorrectly diagnosed with the other ailment in areas with limited health resources. There is a dearth of knowledge of co-infection between COVID-19 and malaria from healthcare providers' perspective.

Purpose: Oxygen may cause serious consequences when administered wrongly. This study aimed to assess doctors' and nurses' knowledge of acute oxygen therapy and perceived delivery barriers.

Participants And Methods: We conducted a cross sectional study among 202 healthcare providers (134 doctors and 68 nurses) in a Nigerian hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) involve neurodegeneration in specific brain areas, with angiotensin II (Ang II) contributing to neuron loss through oxidative stress.
  • Captopril, an ACE inhibitor, was tested on Drosophila melanogaster expressing neurodegenerative peptides to assess its neuroprotective effects through various assays measuring motility and overall fitness.
  • Results showed that captopril improved motility and climbing ability in Drosophila with neurodegeneration but did not significantly affect lifespan, supporting its potential as a neuroprotective agent.

The leaves of Clerodendrum polycephalum Baker (Labiatae) are used as a dietary legume supplement and applied ethnomedicinally for the management of epilepsy, convulsion, and spasms. This study is aimed at evaluating the effects of Clerodendrum polycephalum (CP) leaf extract on chemical-induced seizures in mice and the possible mechanisms of action. Swiss albino mice were pretreated with CP (50, 100, or 500 mg/kg, p.

Epilepsy remains an unmet medical need affecting more than 50 million people worldwide with about 125,000 mortality annually and more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. Nymphaea lotus (also known as water lilly) is an aquatic plant used traditionally to treat convulsive episodes in Southwestern Nigeria. This study was undertaken to evaluate anticonvulsant activity of aqueous Nymphaea lotus extract (ANL) and ethanol Nymphaea lotus extract (ENL) on chemical-induced seizures in mice as well as possible mechanisms of action.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies have several commonalities including neurochemical, morphological and clinical features as well as widespread of cortical and limbic α-synuclein and amyloid-β pathologies. Thus, we evaluated the action of hesperidin on α-synuclein and amyloid-β-induced neurodegeneration in Drosophila melanogaster. The disease causing human Aβ peptide or α- synuclein was expressed respectively, in Elav-GAL4 (pan-neuronally) and dopaminergic neurons (ddc-GAL4) using the UAS-GAL4 system.

Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome is a Primary Immuno-deficiency Syndrome (PIDS) characterized by high serum immunoglobulin E, eczema rash and recurrent sinopulmonary and skin infections. In this report, we present a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip in a young patient with Hyper IgE syndrome. The patient had initially developed a chronic non-healing ulcer and a biopsy done revealed a squamous cell carcinoma.

Introduction: Cuprizone is a neurotoxicant causing neurodegeneration through enzymes inhibition and oxidative stress. D-Ribose-L-Cysteine (DRLC) is a powerful antioxidant with neuroprotective properties. This study explored the antioxidant response of DRLC against cuprizone-induced behavioral alterations, biochemical imbalance and hippocampal neuronal damage in adult wistar rats.

River sediments contain environmental fingerprints that provide useful ecological information. However, the geochemistry of River Atuwara sediments has received less attention over the years. One hundred and twenty-six sediments from 21 locations were collected over a two-season period from River Atuwara, and a detailed investigation of the land use and land cover (LULC) change between 1990 and 2019, analysis of selected toxic and potentially toxic metal(oid)s (TPTM) (Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, Fe, Co and Al) using ICP-OES, pollution index assessment, potential source identification (using center log-transformation approach), potential ecological, and human health risk assessment were conducted.
