Background: Although menopause is a component of chronological aging, it may be induced by exposure to heavy metals like lead. Interestingly, lead exposure, just like the postmenopausal state, has been associated with spatial memory loss and neurodegeneration; however, the impact of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on menopause and lead-induced spatial memory loss and neurodegeneration is yet to be reported.

Aim: The present study investigated the effect and associated mechanism of HRT on ovariectomized-driven menopausal state and lead exposure-induced spatial memory loss and neurodegeneration.

Background: Evident detection of artemisinin resistance markers in patient isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from East Africa threatens the efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) as first-line treatment of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Repositioning previously used antimalarials as complementary addition to ACTs has been suggested as a viable option to mitigating this threat. This study evaluated the potential benefit of chloroquine (CQ) as a complementary partner to dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine (DHA/PQ) in the treatment of malaria in a mice model.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers evaluated data from 271 patients admitted between March 2020 and April 2021, finding that nearly all were treated with antimicrobials, with factors like being single, under 60, having mild symptoms, and diabetes influencing the number of prescriptions.
  • * The study underscores the need for careful monitoring of antimicrobial use in hospitalized COVID-19 patients to mitigate the risks associated with developing antibiotic resistance, especially in the absence of bacterial cultures for diagnosis.

Background: Improving the quality of midwifery education to international standards is critical to prepare competent midwives. Despite the recognised impact of competent midwives, little is known concerning the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE), especially in Africa, where poor investment in quality midwifery education has been reported.

Objective: The aim of this study is to scope and synthesize the existing literature on the implementation of CBE for midwifery programmes and its sustainability in Africa.

Arsenic is a ubiquitous metalloid and heavy metal that contributes to the global decline in human fertility. Humans are constantly exposed to arsenic through biotic and abiotic sources, especially ingestion of arsenic-contaminated food and water. Its exposure is associated with several adverse health challenges, including reproductive toxicity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains one of the most debilitating disease and most common neurological disorder in the world at large. However, with many years of multiple research and billions of dollars invested for the purpose of research, not many therapeutic options exist for the management of this disease. As at 2023, the number has only increased to 7, one of which is a combination of two existing therapies.

Chewing kinematics are well-documented in several mammal species with fused mandibular symphyses, but relatively understudied in mammals with an unfused symphysis, despite the fact that more than half of extant Mammalia have an unfused mandibular symphysis. The Wistar brown rat () is widely used in human health research, including studies of mastication or neurological studies where mastication is the output behavior. These animals are known to have unfused mandibular symphyses and proal jaw (rostrocaudal) motion during occlusion, but the lack of high resolution, 3-dimensional analysis of rat chewing leaves the functional significance of symphyseal mobility unknown.

Background: Adenomyosis is a gynaecological lesion that impairs female fertility and contributes to reduced quality of life. There are several surgical and medical options for the management of this lesion; however, women who wish to conceive opt for medical therapies such as the levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUS) and dienogest, which have various outcomes. To date, there is no consensus regarding which is more effective.

Background: Knowledge on the clinical presentation of dementia is essential for appropriate care, especially in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries where these cases are on a sharp rise and can also aid early detection of other underlying conditions. This study sought to provide a broad and updated socio-demographic, clinical profile, pattern of diagnosis and treatment features of people diagnosed with dementia in this setting.

Method: A retrospective cohort study which reviewed the medical case records of all older adults with dementia receiving treatment at the psychogeriatric and the neurology clinic of the Geriatric Centre (N=192).

Introduction: Less than three decades ago, depression was seen as a predominantly adult disorder as children were considered too developmentally immature to experience depressive disorders, and adolescent low mood was considered as part of 'normal' teenage mood swings. Major depressive disorder in children and adolescents is a serious psychiatric illness especially in paediatric surgical patients. This may be due to their altered metabolic rate and heighten metabolic response to trauma which has significant implications for the psychological development of the child, yet it remains under-recognized and undertreated.

Sexual minority men (gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; SMM) in Nigeria are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to heterosexual men. There is a dearth of research on the correlates of antiretroviral therapy (ART) non-adherence and correlates in both groups. The current study examined the associations of ART non-adherence with sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics among a sample of Nigerian heterosexual and SMM.

Minor salivary glands are widely distributed in the mucosal surface of the lips, palate, nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx, thus can arise from any of these primary sites. Intra-oral minor salivary gland tumors (IMSGTs), while considered rare in the general population are relatively more common when compared to all the other extra-oral sites. Pleomorphic adenoma, as seen in the index patient, is the most commonly diagnosed benign IMSGT.

Bioaerosols generated during toilet flushing can contribute to the spread of airborne pathogens and cross-contamination in indoor environments. This presents an increased risk of fomite-mediated or aerosol disease transmission. This study systematically investigated the factors contributing to increased bioaerosol exposure following toilet flushing and developed an empirical model for predicting the exposure-relevant bioaerosol concentration.
