Article Synopsis
  • * A study assessing data from the National Inpatient Sample found that only 2.3% of PPCM patients developed PE, but those with PE had significantly longer hospital stays and higher medical costs.
  • * Key predictors of higher mortality for PPCM patients included conditions like cardiogenic shock, PE, and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, highlighting the need for careful monitoring and management of these patients.

Introduction Pre-eclampsia leads to long-lasting cardiovascular effects in women in the postpartum period, but prevalence and in-hospital adverse events of coronary artery disease (CAD) in women with pre-eclampsia are poorly understood. The prevalence, outcomes, and mortality risks identified in this study allow for possible routes of clinical intervention of CAD in women with pre-eclampsia. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and outcomes of CAD in women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia compared to those with pre-eclampsia with no history of CAD.

Introduction  Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a poorly understood condition typically characterized by abnormal left ventricular wall motion without causative coronary artery disease and typically presents in post-menopausal women after the experience of a physical or emotional stressor. The pathophysiology of TCM is complex and multifactorial, resulting in complications with varied severity; one of the most concerning complications is thromboembolism, specifically, pulmonary embolism (PE), which is understudied in its relation to TCM. The purpose of this study was to characterize and evaluate the real-world prevalence and outcomes of PE in TCM.

Introduction The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) among patients admitted with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) as well as to analyze the independent association of CAD with in-hospital outcomes among PPCM patients. Methods Data were obtained from the National Inpatient Sample from January 2016 to December 2019. We assessed the independent association of CAD with outcomes in patients admitted with PPCM.

Background Google Gemini (Google, Mountain View, CA) represents the latest advances in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and has garnered attention due to its capabilities similar to the increasingly popular ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, CA). Accurate dissemination of information on common conditions such as hypertension is critical for patient comprehension and management. Despite the ubiquity of AI, comparisons between ChatGPT and Gemini remain unexplored.

Coronary stent dislodgment is a rare complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Although stent dislodgment typically occurs immediately in the intraoperative or perioperative period, it can infrequently occur subacutely in the post-operative period. Diagnosis of stent dislodgment can be seen with various cardiac imaging modalities, from transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram to cardiac computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging to direct visualization on fluoroscopy during cardiac catheterization.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of protamine as a reversal agent for heparin during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
  • Although protamine is not commonly used for this purpose due to concerns about stent thrombosis, the analysis involved 11 studies that assessed its impact on various outcomes, including stent thrombosis, mortality, and complications.
  • The results indicated that using protamine did not increase the risk of stent thrombosis or mortality, and it was associated with fewer major bleeding complications and shorter hospital stays.

Pancreaticobiliary obstruction is a rare but life-threatening complication. Plastic biliary stents are a temporary utility to maintain the patency of the common bile ducts, typically lasting about four months. Biliary stents can rarely have complications, with the most common being migration through the gastrointestinal tract.

Introduction: The association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and morbidity and mortality in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PH) is unknown. Our objective was to examine the difference in socio-demographics, comorbidities, and morbidity/mortality in PH patients also diagnosed with GERD, compared to PH patients without GERD.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of the large U.
