Background: This study aims to analyze the effects of a novel dual-bearing shoulder prosthesis and a conventional reverse shoulder prosthesis on the deltoid and rotator cuff muscle forces for four different arm motions. The dual-bearing prosthesis is a glenoid-sparing joint replacement with a moving center of rotation. It has been developed to treat rotator cuff arthropathy, providing an increased post-operative functionality.

These data are typically acquired from cadaveric testing. Increasingly, they are also estimated from subject-specific imaging-based finite element (FE) models, which are typically built from CT/MR data obtained in supine position and employ pure rotation kinematics.

In that context, the design of anisotropic NPs appears as a very promising and efficient strategy. Furthermore, their bioactive coating also remains a challenge as it should provide colloidal stability, biocompatibility, furtivity along with good water diffusion for MRI.

Previous studies indicate that the human cytomegalovirus (CMV) gene, UL79, is required for late gene expression. However, the mechanism remains to be fully elucidated, and UL79 homologues in other CMVs have not been studied.

The application of DLC as a coating has aimed at lowering wear and to preventing wear particle-induced osteolysis in artificial hip joints. In a medical study femoral heads coated with diamond-like amorphous carbon, a subgroup of DLC, articulating against polyethylene cups were implanted between 1993 and 1995.

The procedure consists of applying a load to each ceramic ball head. This load, being somewhat higher than the maximum physiological load, should not cause any damage in cases where the highly stressed areas are free of flaws.

As a functional model system representative of a cell signalling process that proceeds in a top-down manner, cell collapse induced by semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) was chosen as the target. Polyelectrolyte multilayers were sequentially functionalized with two plasmids encoding Neuropilin-1 (NRP-1) and Plexin-A1 (Plx-A1), respectively, acting as co-receptors for Sema3A.

Two kinds of coatings with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 up to 16 microns were investigated, namely DLC and DLC/Si-DLC, where Si-DLC denotes a 90 nm thick DLC interlayer containing Si.

Ceramic ball heads for total hip replacement are highly loaded in vivo and must meet the sternest requirements concerning strength and safety. High stresses inside the ball head originate from the press fit between the conical stem (made of titanium alloy or steel) and the borehole of the ball. The aim of this study was the development of an optimized contour at the fillet inside the ball head by means of numerical methods, in order to reduce local stress concentrations.

A major limitation for the success of therapeutic strategies based on RNAi has been the delivery and shortlasting action of synthetic RNA. Multilayered polyelectrolyte films (MPFs), consisting of alternate layer-by-layer deposition of polycations and polyanions, have been shown to represent an original approach for the efficient delivery of DNA and proteins to target cells.

Comparing PLL-g-PEG/DNA with PLL/DNA polyplexes, we demonstrate that, due to the presence of PEG, the particles differ not only in size, shape, and crystalline structure, but also in transfection efficiency. While PLL condensates DNA in large agglomerates, PLL grafted with polyethylene glycol 2000 can condensate DNA in long filaments with diameters of some nanometers (6-20 nm).
