Topical Anesthesia in Cutaneous Head and Neck Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: Cutaneous head and neck surgery can safely and effectively be performed using local anesthetic (LA). However, optimizing pain management during LA administration is paramount for patient comfort and procedural efficacy. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of EMLA cream and ethyl chloride (EC) spray in mitigating pain associated with LA administration in cutaneous head and neck surgery.

Vocal cord paralysis as a presenting sign of autosomal recessive spinocerebellar atrophy type 10.

Acquired vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is caused by dysfunction or injury of one or both recurrent laryngeal nerves. Here we report a 41-year-old man with spinocerebellar atrophy, autosomal recessive type 10 (SCAR10) due to an autosomal recessive mutation in the ANO10 gene, with VCP as the presenting symptom. He later developed ataxia and speech disturbance.

Safety of elective paediatric surgery during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Introduction: Corona-virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a huge impact on the delivery of healthcare worldwide, particularly elective surgery. There is a lack of data regarding risk of postoperative COVID-19 infection in children undergoing elective surgery, and regarding the utility of pre-operative COVID-19 testing, and preoperative "cocooning" or restriction of movements. The purpose of this present study was to examine the safety of elective paediatric Otolaryngology surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to incidence of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 infection or major respiratory complications.

Risk of disease transmission from flexible nasoendoscopy during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Background: Concerns have emerged regarding infection transmission during flexible nasoendoscopy.

Methods: Information was gathered prospectively on flexible nasoendoscopy procedures performed between March and June 2020. Patients and healthcare workers were followed up to assess for coronavirus disease 2019 development.
