Certain transient receptor potential (TRP) channels including and are widely expressed in the respiratory tract and have been shown to be the receptors of cigarette smoke and particulate matter-the main causative factors of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of and polymorphisms on COPD predisposition and lung function in COPD patients. The study enrolled 143 COPD patients and 104 smokers with post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) > 70%.

Based on the results of sanogenetic monitoring the health of schoolchildren found that among high school students to the proportion of adolescents with elevated blood pressure (hypertension + hypernormotension) increases from 15-20% in 8th class to 30-50% in 9-11th classes, while the proportion of adolescents with hypertension was 3.7% in all age groups. Comparison of blood pressure with parameters of neurovegetative regulation of the cardiovascular system revealed that the presence of high normal blood pressure in 13-14-year-olds and 17-18-year-olds correlated with an increase in the proportion of low frequencies in the spectrum of HRV and lower values of the sensitivity of arterial baroreflex.

To study whether the genotype of a mycobacterial strain might affect the ability of macrophages (MP) to produce the key cytokines, we determined the synthesis of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-gamma (TNF-gamma), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the infection of murine MP with M. tuberculosis H37Rv and M. bovis BCG, the strains that belong to the same genetic group (M.

Natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster and Hirundo rustica that reside at the territories with different levels of radioactive pollution were investigated. The levels of visible mutations, sex-linked mutations and gonad reduction of Drosophila and the rate of interphase markers of chromosomal instability in erythrocytes of birds were selected as parameters for population monitoring. The results point out to possible reverse dependence among the level of chromosomal instability of birds, the rate of lethal mutations in sex chromosome of Drosophila and the density of radioactive pollution.

Aim of this study was to investigate antiarrhythmic and toxic effects of verapamil in mice and rats with thyrotoxicosis and hypothyroidism. We found that changes of thyroid status lead to the increased sensitivity of animals to toxicity of verapamil. At single intraperitoneal introduction of verapamil, LD50 was 118 +/- 7,7 mg/kg for control euthyroid mice, 53 +/- 4,1 mg/kg for hypothyroid mice, and 77 +/- 6,5 mg/kg for thyrotoxic mice.

The estimation of individual variability and group dynamics of micronuclei rate in buccal cells of participants of transatlantic march of the VIIth Ukrainian Antarctic expedition (Sevastopol--UAS "Akademik Vernadsky"--Sevastopol) was carried out. The general average rate of micronuclei was 2.20 per thousand.

Thirty-five patients with vestibular (25) and cerebellar (10) ataxy were medicated by betacerc during 21 days. A status of balance function was estimated, using stabilometric complex MBN "Biomechanika", before and after the treatment course. After the end of the treatment, symptoms of static ataxy and vertigo were reduced.

Using polyvinylpyrrolidone as an example, it has been shown that photolysis of ceric ammonium nitrate at room temperature can result in crosslinking of macromolecules. This process correlates with the formation of stable aminoxyl radicals, which are registered by EPR. The mechanism involves photodissociation of nitrate radicals produced in the primary reaction into nitric oxide or nitrogen dioxide depending on the wavelength of the light, and simultaneous formation of macroradicals.

The paper is devoted to study of the influence of short-term low-level microwave irradiation (6GHz, modulation 2 Hz, average intensity 0.015 mW/cm2, exposure time 50 min) on some electrophysiological and hormonal parameters in rabbits. No reliable changes in cardiac and respiratory rhythms, electromyogram intensity as well as cortisol, testosterone, insulin and thyroxine level in rabbits' blood were found.

Study on the effect of pentachlorophenol on the succinate oxidase activity of submitochondrial particles and on the reduction level of cytochromes b revealed that the Ki value for PCP is equal to 2-4 microM. The succinate-DCPIP-reductase activity is noncompetitively inhibited with PCP (by 75-85%) (Ki = 3.6 microM).

By electron microscopy and roentgenography glucomannanes from four species of Eremurus have been examined and shown to be polymorphic. Deacetylated glucomannane produces a lamellar form with a high degree of crystallinity. Partially acetylated glucomannane produces a fibrillar form representing a poorly ordered structure with a spaced (4.
