In Lois Lowry's A Summer to Die, protagonist Meg Chalmers appears wiser than her thirteen years, able to handle such painful crises as her sister's death to leukemia, moving to a new town in the middle of a school year, and witnessing the birth of her neighbors' son with an ease and grace equal to the remarkably well-adjusted adults in her life. She also appears to have better sense than some of the not-so-well-adjusted adults who threaten to disrupt her world, such as Clarice Callaway (the town busybody) and Martin Huntington (the-opportunistic lawyer) and even at times her adult friends and neighbors Will, Ben, and Maria.

The authors discuss the importance of psychoanalytic training from the perspectives of a psychiatry resident about to begin psychoanalytic training and a psychiatrist who is a training and supervising psychoanalyst. Drs. Hyun and Alfonso discuss psychoanalytic motivations and engage in a dialogue reflecting on the relevance of psychoanalytic training in current psychiatric practice and the profession’s need for more dynamically trained psychiatrists.

Today, psychiatry residents learn multiple psychotherapeutic techniques during their training. Learning these different modalities at the same time can cause confusion in the areas of assessment, making a psychotherapeutic recommendation, and conducting a treatment. To investigate these issues, we presented a complex training case to three psychotherapy experts.

Delay in diagnosis can result in significant morbidity and possible mortality. We report a case of occult gluteal compartment syndrome causing unresolving rhabdomyolysis.
