Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is a major physical factor that induces structural changes in human skin. The aim of this study was to determine whether the novel silent information regulator 1 (sirtuin 1 SIRT1) protein activator, penilumamide, exerted any protective effects against UVB-induced skin damage using human HaCaT keratinocytes as a model. Enzymatic assays were performed to determine the SIRT1-activating ability of penilumamide, which was compared with that of resveratrol, a potent natural product SIRT1 activator with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Fasiglifam, a candidate targeting GPR40, showed efficacy in clinical trials for type 2 diabetes but exerted liver toxicity. This study investigated the drug-induced liver injury (DILI) risk of Xelaglifam, a new GPR40 agonist, based on the potential toxicity mechanism of Fasiglifam; transporter inhibition, mitochondrial dysfunction, reactive metabolite formation, and covalent binding to proteins. In the hepatobiliary transporter assay, Xelaglifam showed a broader safety margin (>10-fold) against bile acid transporters, suggesting its less likelihood to cause bile acids accumulation, unlike Fasiglifam (<10-fold safety margin).

Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) frequently experience anemia, and maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) levels within a targeted range using erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) is challenging. This study introduces a gated recurrent unit-attention-based module (GAM) for efficient anemia management among patients undergoing chronic dialysis and proposes a novel alert system for anticipating the need for red blood cell transfusions. Data on demographic characteristics, dialysis metrics, drug administration, laboratory tests, and transfusion history were retrospectively collected from patients undergoing hemodialysis at Kangwon National University Hospital between 2017 and 2022.

Aims: Considering the limited data regarding clinical outcomes of patients with non-ST-segment on the ECG elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), this study compared the outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with newer-generation drug-eluting stents stratified by the presence/absence of complex lesions and symptom-to-balloon time (SBT; <48 h or ≥48 h).

Methods: We enrolled 4373 patients with NSTEMI from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institute of Health dataset and stratified them into the complex group (2106 patients; SBT < 48 h, n  = 1365; SBT ≥48 h, n  = 741) and the noncomplex group (2267 patients; SBT < 48 h, n  = 1573; SBT ≥48 h, n  = 694). The primary outcome was the 3-year all-cause mortality rate.

Ferritin, comprising heavy (FTH1) and light (FTL) chains, is the main iron storage protein, and pancreatic cancer patients exhibit elevated serum ferritin levels. Specifically, higher ferritin levels are correlated with poorer pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) prognosis; however, the underlying mechanism and metabolic programming of ferritin involved in KRAS-mutant PDAC progression remain unclear. Here, we observed a direct correlation between FTH1 expression and cell viability and clonogenicity in KRAS-mutant PDAC cell lines as well as with in vivo tumor growth through the control of proline metabolism.

Microplastics (MP) are ubiquitous pollutants with diverse shapes, sizes, and characteristics that pose critical risks to marine organisms and the environment. In this study, we used the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as a marine benthic organism model to investigate the metabolic consequences of exposure to different polyethylene terephthalate MP sizes and shapes: round (27-32 μm), small fibers (200-400 μm), large fibers (3000 μm), small fragments (20 μm), medium fragments (45-75 μm), and large fragments (>150 μm). After exposure to high concentrations (100 mg L) of MP for 14 days, round and small fiber-type MP were highly accumulated in mussels.

However, the application of IONPs as T1 contrast agents has been restricted due to their high r2 values and r2/r1 ratios, which limit their effectiveness in T1 contrast enhancement.
