Antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of propolis from Melipona orbignyi (Hymenoptera, Apidae).

Propolis from stingless bees is well known for its biologic properties; however, few studies have demonstrated these effects. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the chemical composition and antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of propolis from the stingless bee Melipona orbignyi, found in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The chemical composition of the ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) indicated the presence of aromatic acids, phenolic compounds, alcohols, terpenes and sugars.

Background: Alcoholic subjects manifest important deficits in frontal executive function, yet maintain cognitive mental status within normal range.

Methods: This study searched for volumetric measurements of segmented brain structures obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that would predict executive functions and cognitive mental status in alcoholic subjects. The frontal assessment battery (FAB) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were applied to alcoholic subjects who underwent MRI.

Catastrophic Kawasaki disease unresponsive to IVIG in a 3-month-old infant: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

The present report describes the severe evolution of Kawasaki disease in a three-month-old infant. The ailment was initially atypical in its presentation, with the patient exhibiting only persistent fever in association with a progressive lethargy and maculopapular rash on the face, trunk and limbs erroneously diagnosed as roseola infantum. On the 10th day of the condition, mainly due to the unexplained persistence of fever, the infant was admitted to a local hospital.

Indolent systemic mastocytosis: is there a reliable radiographic pattern?

A 14-year-old boy undergoing treatment for nephrotic syndrome with steroids and cyclosporine presented with small sclerotic bone lesions in a routine chest radiograph. Similar lesions were found in other bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton. Despite the paucity of clinical symptoms and absence of laboratory data suggesting systemic mastocytosis, the diagnosis of an indolent form of this disorder was made based on radiographic signs and confirmed by biopsy.

Prophylactic administration of Withania somnifera extract increases host resistance in Listeria monocytogenes infected mice.

In this study, we demonstrated that Withania somnifera L. extract (WSE) protects mice from a lethal dose of Listeria monocytogenes when administered prophylactically at 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg for 10 days, with survival rates up to 30%. These doses also prevented the myelosuppression and the splenomegaly caused by a sublethal infection with L.

Bone marrow progenitor cells from chemically exposed workers display an intrinsic ability for autonomous proliferation.

In this study, the autonomous proliferation of bone marrow progenitor cells (CFU-C), a pathological phenomenon observed in many hematological abnormalities, was investigated in 31 individuals who had been diagnosed as having neutropenia. Of these subjects, 18 had been chronically exposed (range of exposure 5-30 years) to a variety of petroleum distillates. We observed that the group of exposed individuals presented higher numbers of autonomous CFU-C when compared with those unexposed subjects.

Microleakage of new all-in-one adhesive systems on dentinal and enamel margins.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of new all-in-one adhesive systems on enamel and dentin margins with that of a conventional total-etch system.

Method And Materials: Thirty buccal Class V cavities were prepared with enamel and dentin margins in 30 bovine teeth and randomly divided into three groups of 10 specimens each. Group 1 was bonded with Etch & Prime, group 2 with Prompt L-Pop, and group 3 with 35% phosphoric acid plus Prime & Bond 2.
