Gut microbiota alterations in critically ill older patients: a multicenter study.

Background: Aging generates changes in the gut microbiota, affecting its functionality. Little is known about gut microbiota in critically ill older adults. The objective of this study was to describe the profile of gut microbiota in a cohort of critically ill older adults.

Stool Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis.

To determine the concentration of stool short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in critically ill patients with sepsis and to compare the results between the critically ill patient and the control group. This descriptive, multicenter, observational study was conducted in five health institutions. Over a 6-month study period, critically ill patients with sepsis who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and met the inclusion criteria were enrolled, and a control, paired by age and sex, was recruited for each patient.

Critically ill patients are physiologically unstable and recent studies indicate that the intestinal microbiota could be involved in the health decline of such patients during ICU stays. Introduction: Prolonged Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) is associated with life-threatening complications in the pediatric population, being cholestasis one of the most important ones. The source of fatty acids, the amount of phytosterols and the dose of lipids in the nutritional support, have been linked to the development of this complication.

Purpose: To describe the behavior of liver function tests in pediatric patients with TPN where lipid based omega 3 fatty acids (OmegavenR) were used.

[Factors related with weight loss in a cohort of obese patients after gastric bypass].

Introduction: Obesity is held as the 21(st) Century epidemics. Multidisciplinary medical management has been insufficient and surgical techniques are more frequently used. Gastric bypass is considered the gold standard in bariatric surgery; however, some patients report low rates of weight loss, which leads to thinking about other conditioning factors.

Objective: Determining perceived health status profiles for people aged 6 to 69 years old from the central region of Colombia, based on the 2007 National Health Survey.

Method: The survey involved 18,683 people aged 6 to 69 years old from the central region of Colombia. Descriptive statistics and multiple correspondence analyses by sub-region were calculated.
