[Purple urine bag syndrome: An uncommon manifestation of urinary tract infection].

Case Report: A 57-year-old paraplegic male diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and complete spinal cord compression arrived at our clinic because of fever and purple discoloration of the urine. We diagnosed purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) and treated him with oral ciprofloxacin and urinary catheter replacement.

Discussion: PUBS is an unusual phenomenon that occurs predominantly in bedridden patients with long-term urinary catheters, presenting as a purple discoloration of the urine bag.

Tracing the source of an outbreak of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a tertiary-care oncology hospital by epidemiology and molecular methods.

This study describes the clinical and molecular characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates that emerged after an index case in a tertiary-care oncology hospital in Mexico City and identifies whether these isolates were related with the index case. All MRSA strains isolated from January 2006 until December 2007 were included. The clinical and demographic characteristics of patients were analyzed; molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to characterize the isolates.

[Trend of antimicrobial drug-susceptibility of blood isolates at an oncological center (1998-2003)].

Objective: To describe the patterns of antimicrobial resistance organisms isolated in blood cultures from patients detected in a tertiary level of care, teaching oncological hospital.

Material And Methods: All strains obtained from blood cultures from 1998 to 2003 were included and processed using the Bactec and Microscan system to determinate isolates and susceptibility to antimicrobials. The percent difference (increase or decrease) was obtained by comparing the frequency of resistance at baseline and at the end of the study.

[Pseudomonas aeruginosa outbreak, in the area of surgical wound ambulatory care, in postmastectomy patients].

Objective: To describe an outbreak due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in postmastectomy wounds.

Material And Methods: Cases were patients with a surgical infection caused by P. aeruginosa resistant to ciprofloxacin and gentamycin seen between March 13, 2000 and May 18, 2000, at Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia in Mexico City.
