Preoperative Atelectasis in Patients with Obesity Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Pulmonary atelectasis is present even before surgery in patients with obesity. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and extension of preoperative atelectasis in patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery and to determine if variation in preoperative Spo2 values in the seated position at room air is explained by the extent of atelectasis coverage in the supine position.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in a single center specialized in laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

[Sarcopenia: new cut-off value of handgrip in postmenopausal Argentine women].

Introduction: Sarcopenia is a global health problem, there are currently several criteria for its diagnosis and the implementation of its own cut-off values for each population is recommended. The objective was to evaluate the handgrip strength (HG) in postmenopausal women from Buenos Aires and establish a cut-off value.

Methods: A total of 704 women ≥50 years of age were evaluated, who answered a questionnaire on osteoporosis risk and HG was taken.

Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ): Development of a Questionnaire to Assess Training-Related Voice Symptoms Among Prospective Teachers.

Aim: To develop and validate a self-administered population-specific survey, available in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, which investigates the prevalence of voice symptoms and perceptions of risk factors associated with training among prospective teachers.

Methods: The present study had three stages: the first stage included a literature review and content validation by experts that supported the survey development. From this phase, we defined five aspects of the Prospective Teacher's Voice Questionnaire (PTVQ): (1) target population, (2) research objectives, (3) questions to be included, (4) scales for the answers, and (5) relevance, comprehensiveness, clarityclarity, and understandability of the questions.

Comparative survey of gastrointestinal parasites in sympatric Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) and domestic goats using molecular host specific identification.

An isolated population of several hundred Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) inhabits the Gerês-Xurés Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (GXTBR) in north-western Iberian Peninsula, in partial sympatry with tens of thousands domestic goats (Capra hircus). This study aimed to assess the prevalence and shedding intensity of gastrointestinal parasites from sympatric herds of domestic goat and Iberian ibex in autumn 2018. A total of 93 pooled faecal samples were collected from GXTBR (39 from domestic goats and 54 from Iberian ibex) and the host species was identified using molecular techniques, whenever defecation was not visualised in the field.

Impaired bone microarchitecture and strength in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Some studies based on bone biopsy have demonstrated that in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) the mineralization process of the bone matrix is profoundly disturbed. However, the interrelationship between clinical and biochemical features and bone microarchitecture in this disease needs further analysis. With this purpose in mind, we set out three objectives: (i) to determine bone microarchitecture and estimated bone strength in a group of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) and finite element analysis (FEA), (ii) to investigate correlations between duration of disease, biochemical features, bone density, HR-pQCT and FEA parameters, and (iii) to compare HR-pQCT and FEA parameters with a healthy control group.

Psychopathology in paediatric systemic lupus erythematosus.

Introduction: Although systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is more common in adults, when it is diagnosed before the age of 16, it has a worse prognosis. Depressive and anxious symptoms are common in this population but few studies have examined anxiety or its relationship with manifestations of the disease or type of treatment received.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is a vector-transmitted poxvirus that causes disease in cattle. Vector species involved in LSDV transmission and their ability to acquire and transmit the virus are poorly characterized. Using a highly representative bovine experimental model of lumpy skin disease, we fed four model vector species (, , , and ) on LSDV-inoculated cattle in order to examine their acquisition and retention of LSDV.

Achieving global malaria eradication in changing landscapes.

Land use and land cover changes, such as deforestation, agricultural expansion and urbanization, are one of the largest anthropogenic environmental changes globally. Recent initiatives to evaluate the feasibility of malaria eradication have highlighted impacts of landscape changes on malaria transmission and the potential of these changes to undermine malaria control and elimination efforts. Multisectoral approaches are needed to detect and minimize negative impacts of land use and land cover changes on malaria transmission while supporting development aiding malaria control, elimination and ultimately eradication.

Material And Methods: Patients with neurological manifestation (cranial neuritis, radiculoneuritis, meningitis and encephalomyelitis) were recruited in one pediatric and two general hospitals, during January 2006-December 2015. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were drawn from each patient at inclusion.

Influence of the type of emphysema in the relationship between COPD and lung cancer.

Improving skills in pediatric rheumatology in Colombia: a combined educational strategy supported by ILAR.

Colombia is a densely populated country with a small number of pediatric rheumatology specialists, including 14 specialists for a population of 1,927,000 children in 2014. The objective of the study was to improve the skills required for early identification, timely referral, and management of musculoskeletal diseases, especially juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), in a group of pediatricians and pediatric residents in a remote region of Colombia. Supported by grant programs developed by the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR), a combined educational strategy (blended learning) was implemented based on two classroom educational activities and four online modules.
