Article Synopsis
  • Scientists use special mice to study how genes work and find out more about diseases that can affect humans.
  • One specific type of hearing loss is common in kids, and a new mouse model named "rodador" was created to help understand it better.
  • The rodador mouse has a gene mutation that causes deafness and balance problems, which could lead to new discoveries about hearing loss in people.

Chitotriosidase (ChT) is a human chitinase secreted by activated macrophages and its activity is used in therapeutic monitoring of Gaucher disease (GD), the most common lysosomal storage disease. About 6% of the population is homozygous for a duplication of 24 bp in exon 11 of the CHIT1 gene (dup24), which is the main polymorphism that results in the absence of ChT. As ChT enzyme activity can be used as a biomarker in GD, it is important to know the CHIT1 genotype of each patient.

Previous studies have suggested that γ-aminobutyric acid-B (GABA(B)) receptor agonists effectively reduce ethanol intake. The quantification using real-time polymerase chain reaction of Gabbr1 and Gabbr2 mRNA from the prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus, hippocampus, and striatum in mice exposed to an animal model of the addiction developed in our laboratory was performed to evaluate the involvement of the GABA(B) receptor in ethanol consumption. We used outbred, Swiss mice exposed to a three-bottle free-choice model (water, 5% v/v ethanol, and 10% v/v ethanol) that consisted of four phases: acquisition (AC), withdrawal (W), reexposure (RE), and quinine-adulteration (AD).
