Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic connective tissue disease characterized by immune system dysfunction, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, resulting from excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) elements, including collagen and proteoglycans (PGs).
