: Heart rate variability (HRV) is the fluctuation in the time intervals between adjacent heartbeats. HRV is a measure of neurocardiac function that is produced by dynamic autonomic nervous system (ANS) processes and is a simple measure that estimates cardiac autonomic modulation. : The study included 108 patients admitted to the Coronary Intensive Care Unit with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who did not undergo primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or systemic thrombolysis and followed conservative management.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnancy leads to significant changes in the cardiovascular system, and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy (HDPs) pose serious risks for both mothers and babies, affecting overall health outcomes.
  • This study compares heart rate variability (HRV) and cardiac performance, specifically through global longitudinal strain (GLS) and diastolic function, between pregnant women with HDPs and healthy controls.
  • Results show that women with HDPs have lower HRV and GLS, indicating autonomic dysfunction and impaired cardiac performance, suggesting that these measures can effectively identify these issues in HDP cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid hormones are crucial for regulating metabolism, heart function, and the autonomic nervous system, and low levels (hypothyroidism) can lead to cardiovascular issues, including changes in heart rate variability (HRV).
  • The study involved 110 hypothyroid patients who underwent assessments measuring thyroid function and HRV, the latter done via 24-hour ECG monitoring before and after 3 months of treatment.
  • Results showed that while all participants experienced symptoms like palpitations and fatigue, there was no significant heart disease, indicating a link between hypothyroidism and changes in HRV, suggesting thyroid dysfunction affects heart autonomic regulation.

Introduction: East-European data on cancer in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) are scarce. This study aimed to assess the pattern of cancer and related mortality in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing HD.

Methods: Retrospectively analyzing data from 7 HD centers, this study examined 1377 incident HD patients divided into three groups: no-cancers (NoC), cancers that occurred prior to HD initiation (CPI) and de novo cancer developed after HD initiation (DNC).

Primary neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the breast are considered a rare and undervalued subtype of breast carcinoma that occur mainly in postmenopausal women and are graded as G1 or G2 NETs or an invasive neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) (small cell or large cell). To establish a final diagnosis of breast carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation, it is essential to perform an immunohistochemical profile of the tumor, using antibodies against synaptophysin or chromogranin, as well as the MIB-1 proliferation index, one of the most controversial markers in breast pathology regarding its methodology in current clinical practice. A standardization error between institutions and pathologists regarding the evaluation of the MIB-1 proliferation index is present.

Background: Caesarean section rates have continued to trend upward in most countries, including Romania, creating a number of economic challenges. In the public health system, there is no regulation for performing Caesarean sections on demand; it is often done unlawfully, and in private hospitals, it is a real business. Thus, this study aims to investigate the budgetary impact at a hospital level and the profit per procedure by introducing on-demand caesarean sections for a fee.

: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death worldwide, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) is considered a predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events. The study intended to be helpful in finding methods for the preliminary assessment of PWV in primary care units. : The study group consisted of 36 subjects (considered healthy by their own statement) from the medical field (medicine students and residents) aged between 20 and 30 years: 33.

Article Synopsis
  • Kidney dysfunction is common among cancer patients and affects their treatment and quality of life; this study analyzed the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a large group of cancer patients in Eastern Europe.
  • The study included 5,831 biopsy-diagnosed cancer patients from a major hospital in Romania, with 4,342 subjects analyzed for CKD prevalence among different cancer types over two years.
  • The findings revealed that CKD was more prevalent in patients with certain cancers (like renal and pancreatic) and showed a notably high rate of advanced CKD, indicating the need for specialized care teams to address these issues in oncology settings.

Left ventricular (LV) structure and function anomalies are frequent during the CKD continuum and are associated with increased risk of mortality. Cross section and longitudinal ultrasound data are available for advanced CKD and transition to ESKD. Less information is available about LV changes during stable, long-term hemodialysis (HD) treatment.

Background: The presence of metastatic cervical adenopathy is essential for treatment planning and prognosis assessment. Treatment of patients with head and neck cancer with clinically negative cervical lymphadenopathy (N0) remains controversial. Neck palpation, as the method used in tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) staging, has limitations and can provide false negative results in some cases.

Aims: Hypertension (HTN) in pregnancy is a major cause of maternal, foetal and neonatal morbimortality in both developing and developed countries. Arterial stiffness is a predictor of cardiovascular events and can be assessed through augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV). This study was intended to analyse the arterial stiffness in three categories, hypertensive pregnant women vs.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is considered the gold standard in the diagnostic of thyroid nodules. Using the recommended BETHESDA reporting system, up to 20% of results are classified as intermediate cytology. As there is no consensus whether ultrasound evaluation, lobectomy or surgery is the best treatment option, intermediate cytology results are considered a grey zone of the FNA.
