Background: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD) are the most common chronic pain conditions of childhood and are made worse by co-occurring anxiety. Our research team found that the Aim to Decrease Pain and Anxiety Treatment (ADAPT), a six-session coping skills program using cognitive behavioral therapy strategies, was effective in improving pain-related symptoms and anxiety symptoms compared to standard care. In follow-up, this current randomized clinical trial (RCT) aims to test potential neural mechanisms underlying the effect of ADAPT.

Article Synopsis
  • - Research in emergency medicine critically evaluates existing practices, such as thrombolysis for minor strokes and the use of coagulation factors in severe polytrauma cases, to ensure they are effective.
  • - It introduces new technologies that enhance patient care in prehospital settings, like video-laryngoscopy and point-of-care troponin tests.
  • - This research also challenges and explores innovative practices, including double defibrillation and the use of pulmonary ultrasound for pneumonia, helping emergency physicians refine their approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnancy-related complications (PRC) pose a significant public health issue in Europe, where infertility rates among couples range from 5% to 24%.
  • This study re-examined 12 specific genetic variants (SNPs) to explore their potential link to pregnancy loss (PL) in a group of Bosnian women, comparing 154 women who experienced PL with 154 mothers who had live-born children.
  • The results showed no significant association between the studied genetic variants and pregnancy loss, indicating that the influence of these genetic factors on PL remains inconclusive.

Background: CYP3A5 enzyme encoded by is important for drug metabolism in gut and liver, whereas P-glycoprotein by , is an ATP-dependent drug efflux pump which exports endo- and exogenous substances outside the cell.

Aim: The study was to assess the prevalence of alleles: *1, *2, *3, *4, *6 and *7, and C and T of in Poles, Belarusians and Bosnians and to compare it with the data reported from other European populations.

Subjects And Methods: Overall, 511 unrelated healthy subjects from Poland ( = 239), Belarus ( = 104) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ( = 168) were included in this study.

Introduction: Several analysis for different population conclude that endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 gene polymorphism, -675 ID, 4G/5G (ref SNP ID: rs1799889, also described as rs34857375, has merged into rs1799762) may increase risk of pregnancy loss (PL). However, there is a disagreement as to the association 4G allele with pregnancy loss.

Aim: Therefore, we decided to investigate the -675 ID, 4G/5G as a potential genetic factor linked to PL in European and worldwide populations.

Due to inconsistent results of APOE variants in the survival of pregnancy we investigated the potential relationship of APOE rs7412 and rs429358 with pregnancy loss (PL) in Bosnian women. We enrolled 154 women with PL. The minimum week of miscarriage was 6, while the maximum was 28.

Background: The ε2, ε3 and ε4 alleles of APOE gene have been associated with several diseases in different populations. Data on the frequency of alleles are used in both a clinical and evolutionary context. Although the data on frequency of these alleles are numerous, there are no reports for the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A 27-year-old man developed extensive hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) shortly after staging colonoscopy for active, ulcerating, terminal ileal Crohn's disease. Non-operative management was instigated with broad-spectrum antibiotics and thromboprophylaxis. Radiology at 72 h demonstrated resolution of HPVG but revealed fresh non-occlusive left portal vein thrombus.

Background: Aquaculture of piscivorous fish is in continual expansion resulting in a global requirement to reduce the dependence on wild caught fish for generation of fishmeal and fish oil. Plant proteins represent a suitable protein alternative to fish meal and are increasingly being used in fish feed. In this study, we examined the transcriptional response of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to a high marine protein (MP) or low fishmeal, higher plant protein replacement diet (PP), formulated to the same nutritional specification within previously determined acceptable maximum levels of individual plant feed materials.

Pelvic dissociation is a rare but serious potential complication of total hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the false profile view compared with traditional radiographs in detecting pelvic dissociation. Ten cadaver pelves were skeletonized, and noncemented acetabular hip arthroplasty components were implanted.

The bacterium Piscirickettsia salmonis is the etiological agent of salmonid rickettsial septicemia (SRS), a severe disease that causes major economic losses to the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry every year. Little is known about the infective strategy of P. salmonis, which is able to infect, survive within, and replicate inside salmonid macrophages as an intracellular parasite.

Objective: Tranexamic acid reduces blood loss and transfusion in on-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Compared with on-pump, off-pump surgery is associated with less blood loss and transfusion. Therefore, tranexamic acid may be less effective for off-pump surgery, and its safety profile may be different in this setting.

This study examined the practice of co-managed post-operative care and the visual acuity outcomes and complications associated with co-managed services. Data on service utilization and medical outcomes were collected for 2822 cataract surgery procedures performed in 5 ambulatory eye centers between January and July 1988. Average age of patients was 72.

One hundred seventy-nine obese patients (mean body mass index = 36.3) were retrospectively evaluated for the development of cholelithiasis associated with the use of a 2530-kJ/d (605-kcal) very-low-calorie diet (VLCD). Nine percent of patients had preexisting gallstones and 11% of patients developed gallstones either during or within 6 mo of completing the diet.

Despite the quantity of material on medical issues which journalists typically receive, and the tremendous public interest in health news, journalists are only rarely able to provide medical information of any real value to the public. Good news, no matter how tentative, always gets more attention than critical assessment. Deadlines pressure journalists to look only at the surface of the issues that they describe, and few have the expertise necessary to judge the importance of their stories.
