Undocumented people in the United States face innumerable legal and structural barriers to health and health care services, including for kidney failure. Their experiences vary across states and regions due to wide variation in insurance coverage and unreliable access to health-promoting resources, including medical-legal partnerships. This commentary on a case canvasses key policy about structural and legal determinants of health for undocumented persons.

Estimating bacterial load in S. aureus and E. coli bacteremia using bacterial growth graph from the continuous monitoring blood culture system.

Background: We examined whether the time to positivity (TTP) and growth and detection plot graph (GDPG) created by the automated blood culture system can be used to determine the bacterial load in bacteremic patients and its potential association correlation with disease severity.

Methods: Known bacterial inocula were injected into the blood culture bottles. The GDPGs for the specific inocula were downloaded and plotted.

However, these procedures, concentrating on purely tissue-outside physical factors to increase the chemical diffusion, do not enable EDTA to exert its full capacity due to tissue intrinsic chemical resistances around the diffusion passage.

Miracle friends and miracle money in California: a mixed-methods experiment of social support and guaranteed income for people experiencing homelessness.

Background: This paper describes the protocols for a randomized controlled trial using a parallel-group trial design that includes an intervention designed to address social isolation and loneliness among people experiencing homelessness known as Miracle Friends and an intervention that combines Miracles Friends with an economic poverty-reduction intervention known as Miracle Money. Miracle Friends pairs an unhoused person with a volunteer "phone buddy." Miracle Money provides guaranteed basic income of $750 per month for 1 year to Miracle Friends participants.

Background: Unhealthy maternal diet leads to heavy metal exposures from the consumption of ultra-processed foods that may impact gene behavior across generations, creating conditions for the neurodevelopmental disorders known as autism and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with these disorders have difficulty metabolizing and excreting heavy metals from their bloodstream, and the severity of their symptoms correlates with the heavy metal levels measured in their blood. Psychiatrists may play a key role in helping parents reduce their ultra-processed food and dietary heavy metal intake by providing access to effective nutritional epigenetics education.

Background And Aims:  Glycoprotein VI (GPVI) is the major platelet-specific collagen receptor. GPVI shedding with generation of soluble GPVI (sGPVI) is an endogenous feedback mechanism preventing platelet overstimulation. sGPVI has not been investigated in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), especially regarding its potential value as a predictor of ischemic and bleeding risk.

p53 restoration in small cell lung cancer identifies a latent cyclophilin-dependent necrosis mechanism.

The p53 tumor suppressor regulates multiple context-dependent tumor suppressive programs. Although p53 is mutated in ~90% of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) tumors, how p53 mediates tumor suppression in this context is unknown. Here, using a mouse model of SCLC in which endogenous p53 expression can be conditionally and temporally regulated, we show that SCLC tumors maintain a requirement for p53 inactivation.

Few bystander intervention trainings programs have evaluated behavioral outcomes in previously trained upper-level undergraduate students. Rigorous study designs are necessary to understand how multi-topic programs influence student outcomes to intervene against sexual violence, racism, and high-risk alcohol situations. A single-session bystander training for emphasizing communication strategies was developed for juniors and seniors on a private, Midwestern college campus.

Purpose: To quantify surgeon intuition, determine whether a surgeon's prediction of outcomes after hip arthroscopy correlates with actual patient-reported outcomes (PRO), and identify differences in clinical judgment between expert and novice examiners.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study was conducted at an academic medical center on adults undergoing primary hip arthroscopy for treatment of femoroacetabular impingement. A Surgeon Intuition and Prediction (SIP) score was completed preoperatively by an attending surgeon (expert) and physician assistant (novice).

Minimal Collagen-Binding Epitope of Glycoprotein VI in Human and Mouse Platelets.

Glycoprotein VI (GPVI) is a platelet-specific receptor for collagen and fibrin, regulating important platelet functions such as platelet adhesion and thrombus growth. Although the blockade of GPVI function is widely recognized as a potent anti-thrombotic approach, there are limited studies focused on site-specific targeting of GPVI. Using computational modeling and bioinformatics, we analyzed collagen- and CRP-binding surfaces of GPVI monomers and dimers, and compared the interacting surfaces with other mammalian GPVI isoforms.

However, no study has examined how presacral vertebrae shape varies among anuran species at the macroevolutionary scale nor how intrinsic (developmental and phylogenetic) and extrinsic (ecological) factors may have influenced vertebrae shape evolution.

Diagnostic intra-articular injection with provocative functional testing predicts patient-reported outcomes following hip arthroscopy: a prospective investigation.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the predictive value of preoperative diagnostic intra-articular injections with formal provocative post-injection functional testing on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following hip arthroscopy. Patients aged 14-40 with suspected labral pathology and/or femoroacetabular impingement were prospectively enrolled. Patients received a diagnostic intra-articular anesthetic injection then completed a battery of provocative physical function (PF) tests and were asked to rate the percentage of pain improvement.

Background: Large-scale prostate cancer (PCa) database reviews have found a consistent discrepancy in the mortality rate in Black patients compared to their White counterparts. Furthermore, differences in PCa treatment and outcomes among Black men of different ethnic origins have also been identified. Due to the heterogeneity of PCa-impacted communities and the unclear impact of patient immigration status on treatment outcomes, we sought to determine the demographic factors associated with treatment choice for definitive treatment of PCa in our single institution's patient population of Black immigrants.

A novel β-catenin/BCL9 complex inhibitor blocks oncogenic Wnt signaling and disrupts cholesterol homeostasis in colorectal cancer.

Dysregulated Wnt/β-catenin signaling is implicated in the pathogenesis of many human cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), making it an attractive clinical target. With the aim of inhibiting oncogenic Wnt activity, we developed a high-throughput screening AlphaScreen assay to identify selective small-molecule inhibitors of the interaction between β-catenin and its coactivator BCL9. We identified a compound that consistently bound to β-catenin and specifically inhibited in vivo native β-catenin/BCL9 complex formation in CRC cell lines.
