While dermal piercings have become increasingly popular, there is limited dermatologic literature detailing a standard removal technique. Dermal piercings are often removed in the emergency department using non-serrated hemostats and a rocking motion until the anchor can be pulled through the skin. Removal by these means may lead to unnecessary damage to the skin, infections, and scarring.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition of excessive sweating, which can have profound physical and mental effects. Hyperhidrosis is a significantly impactful and distressing illness that warrants equal attention as other more well-known dermatologic conditions. However, because of a lack of awareness among the public, stigma, and difficulty with access to treatments (due to cost or insurance coverage), patients are less likely to be diagnosed and treated.

Article Synopsis
  • * A search of PubMed and Embase revealed several anticholinergics under investigation for HH, including glycopyrrolate, oxybutynin, sofpironium bromide, and umeclidinium, with glycopyrrolate being the only FDA-approved option.
  • * The findings suggest that understanding these topical treatments is crucial for managing HH, and although safety data is limited, the emerging treatments have minimal known risks for patients.

Objectives: To investigate the ability of older adults, younger adults and nutritionists to assess portion size using traditional methods versus a computer-based method. This was to inform the development of a novel dietary assessment method for older adults "The NANA system".

Design: Older and younger adults assessed the portion size of self-served portions of foods from a buffet style set up using traditional and computerised portion size assessment aids.

Background: Frailty can be defined as an inflammatory state with a loss of physiologic reserve in multiple systems that manifests as a decreased ability to respond to stressors that ultimately leads to an increased risk of adverse outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the ease of frailty testing in a pre-kidney transplant clinic and the resources required to do so. A secondary goal was to better understand the utility of frailty testing when evaluating potential kidney transplant recipients.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression is underdiagnosed among older adults, and a study involving 40 participants used touchscreen technology to self-report mood over three weeks to predict future depression status.
  • A machine learning approach analyzed the data, identifying sadness and tiredness as key indicators, with the model showing a strong predictive ability (area under the ROC curve of 0.88).
  • Despite a small sample size, the findings suggest these self-reported measures could be useful in identifying at-risk older adults for depression, addressing the issue of underdiagnosis.

The "Novel Assessment of Nutrition and Ageing" (NANA) toolkit is a computerized system for collecting longitudinal information about older adults' health and behavior. Here, we describe the validation of six items for measuring older adults' self-reported mood and appetite as part of the NANA system. In Study 1, 48 community-living older adults (aged 65-89 years) completed NANA measures of their current mood and appetite alongside standard paper measures, on three occasions, in a laboratory setting.

Dietary assessment in older adults can be challenging. The Novel Assessment of Nutrition and Ageing (NANA) method is a touch-screen computer-based food record that enables older adults to record their dietary intakes. The objective of the present study was to assess the relative validity of the NANA method for dietary assessment in older adults.

Prospective measurement of nutrition, cognition, and physical activity in later life would facilitate early detection of detrimental change and early intervention but is hard to achieve in community settings. Technology can simplify the task and facilitate daily data collection. The Novel Assessment of Nutrition and Ageing (NANA) toolkit was developed to provide a holistic picture of an individual's function including diet, cognition and activity levels.

Innovative technologies are rapidly emerging that offer caregivers the support and means to assist older adults with cognitive impairment to continue living "at home." Technology research and development efforts applied to older adults with dementia invoke special grant review and institutional review board concerns, to ensure not only safe but also ethically appropriate interventions. Evidence is emerging, however, that tensions are growing between innovators and reviewers.

This paper describes the evaluation and support of assistive technology designed to increase the independence of people with dementia. Devices were evaluated by people with dementia in their own homes. Working with and supporting people with dementia requires relational skills not normally needed by installers and technical supporters.
