A novel carmovirus infecting angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia) was recently described independently by researchers in the United States, Israel, and Germany (1,2,4). Angelonia flower break virus (AnFBV) and Angelonia flower mottle virus were proposed as appropriate names for this carmovirus. A Florida isolate of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was able to complement cell-to-cell movement of a movement-defective Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) vector expressing the jellyfish green fluorescent protein (GFP). To test for complementation of movement in the absence of other TSWV proteins, the open reading frame for the NSm protein was expressed from TMV constructs encoding only the TMV replicase proteins. NSm was expressed from either the coat protein or movement protein subgenomic promoter, creating virus hybrids that moved cell to cell in inoculated leaves of tobacco, providing the first functional demonstration that NSm is the TSWV movement protein.

We have sequenced the complete genome of a hibiscus-infecting tobamovirus, Hibiscus latent Singapore virus (HLSV). The experimental host range of HLSV is similar to that of another distinct species of hibiscus infecting tobamovirus, Hibiscus latent Fort Pierce virus (HLFPV). Three aspects of the infection process of a new tobamovirus species, Hibiscus latent Fort Pierce virus, recently isolated from hibiscus in Florida, were examined: (i) transmission efficiency of rub-, slash-, and cut-inoculation for two hibiscus cultivars, Pink Versicolor and Brilliant Red; (ii) distribution within infected hibiscus plants; and (iii) treatments to prevent infection during plant propagation and pruning. Rub-, slash-, and cut-inoculation methods were all effective and yielded infection rates of 66, 74, and 70%, respectively, in Pink Versicolor and 50, 56, and 38%, respectively, in Brilliant Red. Analysis of virus distribution in infected plants over time revealed that the virus moved from the place of inoculation to the roots and then toward the bottom (oldest) leaves of the plants.

We studied a telediabetes programme that had been in operation for 10 years, to identify the factors in its sustainability. We reviewed archive documents, conducted interviews with programme administrators and primary care providers, observed diabetes consultations and surveyed patient satisfaction. Three success factors were identified: the administration took a long-term view of the value of the telemedicine service; telediabetes enabled structured use of staff time and facilities; and service delivery followed national diabetes standards and a well defined cycle of care within a long-term quality improvement programme.

A novel tobamovirus recently was isolated from hibiscus in Florida. Serological and molecular methods, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), dot-blot immunoassay (DBIA), tissue-blot immunoassay (TBIA), and immunocapture reverse-transcription poly-merase chain reaction (IC-RT-PCR) were compared to evaluate their usefulness for diagnosis of this virus. Each method was tested with partially purified virus preparations and tissue samples from infected hibiscus and Chenopodium quinoa plants.

Tobamoviruses are among the best characterized and most studied plant viruses. Three subgroups of tobamoviruses correspond to viral genome sequence and host range to include those viruses infecting (i) solanaceous plants, (ii) brassicas, or (iii) cucurbits or legumes. We isolated a virus from Florida landscape plantings of the malvaceous plant hibiscus (Hibiscus rosasinensis) that appears to be a tobamovirus based upon its virion morphology, genome organization, and coat protein sequence.
