Background: The demographics of medical schools reveal a growing trend towards greater gender and underrepresented in medicine (UIM) representation among students, yet surgical residency lags behind. This study explores the demographics of first-year medical students (M1s) and their initial career interests.
Methods: A panel of faculty physicians and fourth-year medical students in surgical and nonsurgical specialties was held for M1s during orientation week.

There is a dearth in the literature evaluating educational interventions for counseling skills among preclinical medical students. Closing this gap is crucial to taking advantage of critical opportunities early in training.

Control measures rely on pesticides with negative impacts on the environment, natural ecosystems, and human and animal health. In contrast, gene-targeting methods have the potential to specifically target the vector species and/or reduce pathogen transmission.

Medical student exposure and comfort with these surgeries, however, is lagging. This program sought to improve student interest and confidence through additional robotic exposure.

This curriculum aims to foster sharing of personal medical error stories, review and practice error management and coping strategies, and impact error response factors.
Methods: Faculty identified factors related to effective physician error management and recovery in order to develop a targeted curriculum for family medicine residents.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is increasingly emphasized as a climate mitigation solution, as scientists, policy makers, and land managers prioritize enhancing belowground C storage. To identify key underlying drivers of total SOC distributions, we compiled a global dataset of soil C stocks held in three chemical forms, reflecting different mechanisms of organic C protection: free particulate organic C (fPOC), physically protected particulate organic C (oPOC), and mineral-protected soil organic C (mSOC). In our dataset, these three SOC pools were differentially sensitive to the effects of climate, soil mineralogy, and ecosystem type, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between physical and chemical C protection mechanisms.

Purpose: To systematically assess the association between cigarette smoking and development of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) in the general adult population. Heterogeneity will be explored appropriately.
Methods: Outcomes of glaucoma, OAG and POAG were explored in adults who were current, former, and never cigarette smokers.
Objective: Negative stereotypes associated with surgery by medical students are well documented in literature. Many cite long hours, poor work-life balance, pessimism, mean personalities, and cynicism as pervasive among surgeons and operating room culture. If allowed to persist, these negative perceptions can deter otherwise interested students from pursuing surgical subspecialties.

Watermelon vine decline (WVD), caused by whitefly-transmitted squash vein yellowing virus (SqVYV), is a disease that has caused over $60 million in losses in the US and continues to occur regularly in southeastern states.

Objectives: Medical error is common and significantly impacts patients, physicians, learners, and public perception of the medical system; however, residents receive little formal training on this topic. Research on error response in practicing physicians is limited, and even more so on medical education interventions to improve this.
Background: The APP/PS1 mouse model recapitulates pathology of human Alzheimer's disease (AD). While amyloid-β peptide deposition and neurodegeneration are features of AD, the pathology may involve inflammation and impaired vascular regeneration.
Objective: This study evaluated inflammatory environments in the brain and bone marrow (BM), and the impact on brain microvascular density.
Background: In clinical practice, internal fixation (IF) is a commonly utilized technique for metastatic bone disease (MBD) to the distal femur. Additionally, distal femoral reconstruction (DFR) has shown to be an effective surgical technique for primary tumors and MBD in the distal femur. The existing body of research comparing these methods has not focused on MBD or pathological fractures and thus does not guide surgical approach in the case of distal femoral MBD.

This study investigates the perceptions of near-peer style instruction in third-y medical students undergoing a surgical clinical clerkship. We hypothesized that near-peer instruction would provide a beneficial educational experience to third-y medical students during their surgical clinical clerkship.

To mitigate the negative societal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, impactful and creative science communication was needed, yet little research has explored how to encourage COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and address misconceptions held by non-Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics majors (referred to as non-majors). We have previously demonstrated that including expert guest lectures in the vaccine module in the non-major introductory biology course helps combat students' vaccine hesitancy.

In 2022, the Virginia Chickahominy Indian Tribe partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center to investigate concerns about a potential cancer cluster near a local landfill. While investigating cancer clusters is complex due to long latency and multifactorial causes, the community's concerns about structural factors driving cancer risk warrant exploration. Thus, the Chickahominy T.
