The appearance of a surface depends on four main appearance attributes, namely color, gloss, texture, and translucency. Gloss is an important attribute that people use to understand surface appearance, right after color. In the past decades, extensive research has been conducted in the field of gloss and gloss perception, with different aims to understand the complex nature of gloss appearance.

The accuracy of recovered spectra from camera responses mainly depends on the spectral estimation algorithm used, the camera and filters selected, and the light source used to illuminate the object. We present and compare different light source spectrum optimization methods together with different spectral estimation algorithms applied to reflectance recovery. These optimization methods include the Monte Carlo (MC) method, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and multi-population genetic algorithm (MPGA).

We evaluate an image-based multiangle bidirectional reflectance distribution function measurement setup by comparing it to measurements from two commercially available goniospectrophotometers. The image-based setup uses an RGB camera to perform bidirectional measurements of the sample material. We use a conversion matrix to calculate luminance from the captured data.
