Introduction: The aromatase enzyme plays an important role in the progress of hormone-dependent breast cancer, especially in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancers. In case of postmenopausal women, the aromatization of androstenedione to estrone in adipose tissue is the most important source of estrogen. Generally 60%-75% of pre- and post-menopausal women suffer from estrogen-dependent breast cancer, and thus suppressing estrogen has been recognized to be a successful therapy.

In search of new anti-breast cancer agents, the present study envisaged the design and synthesis of a series of benzopyran-chalcones. All the synthesized compounds were assayed for their in-vitro anticancer activity against ER + MCF-7 and triple-negative MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines using SRB assay. The synthesized compounds were found active against ER + MCF-7 cell lines.

Rheum emodi is used as a culinary plant across the world and finds an eminent role in the Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese systems of medicine. The plant is known to principally contain 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinones (DHAQs) like rhein, aloe emodin, emodin, chrysophanol and physcion that possess diverse pharmacological and therapeutic actions. The present work deals with developing a platform technology for isolation of these DHAQs and evaluating their anti-diabetic potential.
