Background: Postauricular skin is one of the potential donor sites for split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs).

Objective: To objectively quantify how postauricular donor sites heal after STSG harvesting.

Materials And Methods: A cohort of 39 Mohs micrographic surgery patients repaired with STSGs (total 41 surgical defects) was established.

Postoperative wound care after dermatologic procedures: a comparison of 2 commonly used petrolatum-based ointments.

An appropriate selection of topical agents for wound care is important to promote uncomplicated healing. Petrolatum-based ointments, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment (AHO) and white petroleum jelly, are commonly employed to keep wounds moist postoperatively. While they have beneficial properties for wound healing, they also may cause wound redness and swelling.

Skin cancer in Puerto Rico: a multiannual incidence comparative study.

Background: The incidence of skin cancer continues to increase worldwide. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of skin cancer in Puerto Rico in a selected year (2005) and to compare these findings with those previously reported for Puerto Rico in 1974 and 1981 and with other countries.

Methods: The data was collected from the pathology reports corresponding to the period of January to December 2005 of 21 participating Pathology Laboratories throughout Puerto Rico.

Periorbital mucinosis: a variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus?

Lupus erythematosus has a wide spectrum of cutaneous manifestations, including periorbital mucinosis. We report 3 cases of periorbital mucinosis occurring in association with other cutaneous signs of lupus erythematosus. Based on a review of the literature, periorbital mucinosis is a rare and not widely recognized clinical manifestation of the disease.

Spitz nevus in a Hispanic population: a clinicopathological study of 130 cases.

Spitz nevus is an uncommon melanocytic nevus distinctive by its epithelioid and spindled melanocytes. Many studies have attempted to characterize Spitz nevus, but none of them in a Hispanic population. Our aim is to characterize the clinical and histopathological presentation of the Spitz nevus in a Hispanic population.

Persistent eyelid swelling in a patient with rosacea.

Persistent facial swelling may occur as a rare complication of rosacea. This finding has been referred to as lymphedematous rosacea, Morbihan's disease or persistent solid facial edema. A literature review for cases of lymphedematous rosacea revealed that the chronic inflammatory process that accompanies the disease contributes to an increase in the permeability of blood vessels.

MSH-2 and MLH-1 protein expression in Muir Torre syndrome-related and sporadic sebaceous neoplasms.

Background: Muir-Torre Syndrome (MTS) is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by the predisposition to both sebaceous neoplasm and internal malignancies. MTS-associated sebaceous neoplasms reveal mutations in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes and microsatellite instability. A significant part of MTS patients represents a phenotypic variant, the hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).
