Introduction: Nail technicians may serve as a valuable tool in the early detection of skin cancer through their high exposure to the nails, hands, and feet. Despite the availability of dermatologist-created platforms that offer certification in skin cancer screening, it is unclear if these resources are being utilized by nail technicians. We conducted a pilot study to assess nail technician certification status, awareness, and interest in these programs.

Article Synopsis
  • Common cold coronaviruses (ccCoVs) and influenza viruses are common causes of upper respiratory infections, but the health effects of ccCoV infections are not well understood.
  • A study involving 3,935 outpatients compared symptoms and outcomes between ccCoV and influenza infections, finding that sore throat, nasal discharge, headache, and myalgia were more common in ccCoV, while fever was prevalent in influenza cases.
  • Patients with underlying health conditions had increased primary care visits for respiratory symptoms following both infections, suggesting that managing these comorbidities is crucial to reduce negative health impacts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to understand why survival rates for bladder cancer have declined over the last 40 years, using data from the South Australian Cancer Registry.
  • While the overall incidence of invasive bladder cancer has decreased, older age at diagnosis has increased, leading to decreased survival rates, particularly in patients aged 80 and above.
  • Factors like male sex improved survival outcomes, but socioeconomic status had no significant impact; ultimately, the aging population’s diagnosis trends play a crucial role in the observed decline in survival rates.

JPEG is the most commonly utilized image coding standard for storage and transmission purposes. It achieves a good rate-distortion trade-off, and it has been adopted by many, if not all, handheld devices. However, often information loss occurs due to transmission error or damage to the storage device.

Introduction: Amblyopia is an important public health concern associated with functional vision loss and detrimental impact on the physical and mental well-being of children. The gold standard for diagnosis of amblyogenic conditions currently involves screening by orthoptists and/or ophthalmologists. The bloom of technology enables the use of home-based screening tools to detect these conditions at an early stage by the layperson in community, which could reduce the burden of screening in the community, especially during restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, intraocular pressure is the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma; thus, identifying other modifiable determinants may have far-reaching outcomes. There has been increasing interest in vitamin D status and glaucoma pathogenesis as low vitamin D has been identified by some studies as an independent risk factor for glaucoma. Although the exact mechanism of vitamin D in glaucoma remains uncertain, there is sufficient evidence to continue research in this area.
