Utilization rates of dermatologist-created skin cancer screening certification services by nail technicians.

Introduction: Nail technicians may serve as a valuable tool in the early detection of skin cancer through their high exposure to the nails, hands, and feet. Despite the availability of dermatologist-created platforms that offer certification in skin cancer screening, it is unclear if these resources are being utilized by nail technicians. We conducted a pilot study to assess nail technician certification status, awareness, and interest in these programs.

Utility of PSA free-to-total ratio for clinically significant prostate cancer in men with a PSA level of <4 ng/mL.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) free-to-total ratio (FTR) and International Society of Urological Pathology Grade Group ≥2, clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) in men with a low PSA level (≤4 ng/mL). Patients and Methods Data were obtained from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial. Patients with a PSA level of ≤4 ng/mL and who received a biopsy within a year of this PSA measurement were included.

Background: Adolescence is a pivotal developmental phase, marked by a high prevalence of mental health issues. The Singapore Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) study aims to assess the prevalence of mental health symptoms, sociodemographic risk factors, and the protective role of resilience in a multi-ethnic, Asian school-going adolescent population.

Methods: School-based adolescents aged 11-18 and their parents were invited from a stratified sample of national schools, designed to be demographically representative of the mainstream school-going population.

Contemporary status of diagnostic endoluminal ultrasound and optical coherence tomography in the ureter.

Objective: To evaluate via a review of published literature, the efficacy of endoluminal ultrasound (ELUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the following ureteric diseases: urolithiasis, upper tract urothelial carcinoma, stricture disease and pelvic-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO).

Patients And Methods: Ureteric high-frequency ELUS provides 360° imaging, to a depth of 20 mm, and has been demonstrated to assess ureteric stricture length, degree of fibrosis and aetiology. OCT produces high-quality images with a penetration depth of 2 mm.

Mapping vision loss of patients in a glaucoma backlog following the COVID-19 pandemic: a real-world analysis using the Glauc-Strat-Fast risk stratification tool.

Introduction: Glauc-Strat-Fast is a clinical tool recommended by The Royal College of Ophthalmologists to classify glaucoma patients into strata of risk for significant future sight loss and an estimate of resource requirement. The aim of this study was to map the movement of glaucoma patients across stratification boundaries on Glauc-Strat-Fast during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Subjects And Methods: Glauc-Strat-Fast was applied to a consecutive sample of 100 primary open angle glaucoma patients in a backlog at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

A Case Report of Guillain-Barré Syndrome In Association with SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination in Malaysia.

Purpose: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccine administration is very rare. Early recognition of GBS at early stage could prevent extensive nerve damage with potential respiratory and autonomic failure.

Case Report: We report a case of paraparetic spectrum of GBS in a 53-year-old lady who presented with rapidly progressive acute flaccid paralysis involving both lower extremities with areflexia eight days after the first dose of Sinovac vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 in Malaysia.

Home-based screening tools for amblyopia: a systematic review protocol.

Introduction: Amblyopia is an important public health concern associated with functional vision loss and detrimental impact on the physical and mental well-being of children. The gold standard for diagnosis of amblyogenic conditions currently involves screening by orthoptists and/or ophthalmologists. The bloom of technology enables the use of home-based screening tools to detect these conditions at an early stage by the layperson in community, which could reduce the burden of screening in the community, especially during restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ovarian tissue grafting: Lessons learnt from our experience with 55 grafts.

Purpose: Uncertainties remain regarding the clinical efficacy of ovarian tissue cryopreservation and grafting. We report a retrospective analysis of reproductive outcomes and lessons learnt following 55 ovarian tissue transplant procedures at our center from 2006 to 2019.

Methods: We analyzed variables related to graft success such as tissue volume, follicular density, total follicular volume, and age on the duration of graft function.

Importance: Quantifying severity of complications in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgical trials is needed. A consensus classification system will help surgeons to more effectively compare harms of different surgical techniques.

Objective: To develop a new consensus-based classification to quantify severity of complications of RRD surgery.

Importance: Knowledge on the frequency and severity of complications in surgical trials for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is essential to determine whether surgical procedures are developed and compared adequately, taking into account not only efficacy but also harms.

Objective: To review standards of reporting of complications in recent randomized clinical trials of RRD surgery.

Evidence Review: This systematic review included randomized clinical trials on RRD surgery published between January 2008 and January 2021 in Embase, MEDLINE, and Web of Science Core Collection databases.

Metastatic testicular choriocarcinoma presenting as eyelid swelling and ptosis.

A 34-year-old man presented with an 8-day history of swelling and ptosis affecting the right upper eyelid. An MRI scan showed right superior rectus enlargement. Histology of an incisional biopsy of the muscle demonstrated metastatic choriocarcinoma to the orbit, positive for pan-cytokeratins, beta-HCG and GATA3.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed extraordinary demands on healthcare services worldwide. Some have reported increased viral transmission to healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures such as intubation. We report our experience with universal preoperative and preprocedural screening for COVID-19 in children requiring general anaesthesia with low risk of having the infection.

Low systemic vitamin D as a potential risk factor in primary open-angle glaucoma: a review of current evidence.

Currently, intraocular pressure is the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma; thus, identifying other modifiable determinants may have far-reaching outcomes. There has been increasing interest in vitamin D status and glaucoma pathogenesis as low vitamin D has been identified by some studies as an independent risk factor for glaucoma. Although the exact mechanism of vitamin D in glaucoma remains uncertain, there is sufficient evidence to continue research in this area.

The effects of age on clinical characteristics, hospitalization and mortality of patients with influenza-related illness at a tertiary care centre in Malaysia.

Background: Age is an established risk factor for poor outcomes in individuals with influenza-related illness, and data on its influence on clinical presentations and outcomes in the South-East Asian settings are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the above among adults with influenza-related upper respiratory tract infection at a teaching hospital in Malaysia.

Methods: A retrospective case-note analysis was conducted on a cohort of 3935 patients attending primary care at the University Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia from February 2012 till May 2014 with URTI symptoms.

The Only Eye Study (OnES): a qualitative study of surgeon experiences of only eye surgery and recommendations for patient safety.

Objective: Performing surgery on patients with only one seeing-eye, where complications may result in catastrophic vision loss, presents unique challenges for the ophthalmic care team. There is currently no evidence regarding how surgeons augment their care when treating only eye patients and no guidelines for how these patients should be managed in hospital eye services. This study aimed to explore ophthalmic surgeons' experiences of only eye surgery and perceptions of current practice.

Purpose: Self-care in chronic disease is increasingly important. In glaucoma services, there is an unmet need for a self-care tool such as a patient passport. This study aims to evaluate adoption of a new self-care tool, the Glaucoma Patient Passport (GPP) within a tertiary hospital glaucoma service.

The UK Paediatric Ocular Trauma Study 3 (POTS3): clinical features and initial management of injuries.

Purpose: Worldwide, as many as 6 million children annually sustain ocular trauma, with up to a quarter of a million children requiring hospitalization. Management of pediatric ocular trauma differs from that in adults, both in terms of initial assessment and acute intervention, with significant variation in practice between different centers. Patterns of healing and long-term outcomes are also very different for children compared to adults.
