This phenomenon is consistently observed in tasks in which participants are asked to select one of two buckets to carry to a target. Surprisingly, on a high proportion of trials participants choose the bucket that is closer to them (and further from the target) as opposed to the bucket that is further from them (and closer to the target).

Patients tend to experience multiple symptoms that can include anxiety, fear, depression, fatigue, weakness, peripheral neuropathy, and abdominal pain, which reduce quality of life (QoL) and may compromise the treatment continuum. Many of those symptoms are amenable to complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) therapies as a part of supportive and palliative care.

Methods: The study was a prospective evaluation of patients undergoing twice-weekly treatments with either acupuncture alone (single-modality, group A) or with additional manual-movement and mind-body therapies (multimodality, group B), for 6 weeks. Symptom severity was assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, and 9 weeks using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Taxane (FACT-Tax) tool; and von Frey perception thresholds.
Background: To explore the impact of acupuncture with other complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) modalities on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and quality of life (QoL) in oncology patients.
Methods: In this prospective, pragmatic, and patient-preference study, patients with CIPN were treated with acupuncture and CIM therapies (intervention group) or standard care alone (controls) for 6 weeks. Patients in the intervention arm were randomized to twice-weekly acupuncture-only (group A) or acupuncture with additional manual-movement or mind-body CIM therapies (group B).

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to assess recent data on possible effective and safe complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) modalities that can be of help to patients affected by cancer that suffer from cancer-related fatigue (CRF).
Recent Findings: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common, persistent, and challenging symptoms among cancer patients and survivors. Many world-leading cancer centers incorporate CIM into routine cancer care including integrating multiple approaches to address CRF.
The paper analyzes the mechanism of partitioning and rejection of organic solutes by polyamide membranes for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. The partitioning of homologous series of alcohols and polyols, in which polarity changes with size in opposite ways, was measured using attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy. The results show that the partitioning of polyols monotonously decreases with size, whereas for alcohols it is not monotonous and slightly decreases for small C1-C3 alcohols followed by a sharp increase for larger alcohols.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe paper examines attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy as a tool for quantifying the partitioning of small molecular species between a solution and a thin film, while the film is directly exposed to the solution for equilibration. For the case of a thin film having a thickness substantially smaller than the decay length of the evanescent wave, we developed suitable linear relationships that relate the measured absorption of the characteristic band to the concentration of the species under study in the film and in solution. In the application of ATR-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the method is particularly suitable for films a few tens to hundreds of nanometers thick and for solutes that preferentially partition into the film.
