Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are synthetic chemicals used in products like flame retardants and plasticizers and pose toxicity risks to aquatic life.
A study in two major rivers in southwest Nigeria examined the concentrations and ecological risks of eight OPEs, finding significant levels of TBOEP and varying profiles of other OPEs in the sediments.
The research indicated moderate to high ecological risks from specific OPEs, particularly TCIPP and TDCIPP, highlighting the need for more investigation into the effects of these chemicals on freshwater ecosystems.
